Job Overview
Join Thread’s innovative research and development team as a full-time Mechanical, Industrial, or Process Technician at our new pre-commercial facility in Edmonton, Alberta. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career mechanical technician that enjoys problem solving as part of a team.
You will support leading carbon materials scientists and engineers in designing, maintaining, and operating proprietary equipment and systems to produce carbon fiber from bitumen-based feedstocks. This role requires strong mechanical sense, a desire to learn and work hands-on with a variety of tools, and a dedicated commitment to safety.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with research engineers and scientists to prepare, operate, and test bitumen-to-precursor, intermediate fiber, and carbon fiber production processes.
- Research, master, and ensure the safe operation and maintenance of facility systems and equipment.
- Perform equipment installation, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure seamless operation.
- Work collaboratively with team members to identify and solve day-to-day operational and engineering challenges.
- Ensure equipment, tools, and materials in clean, organized, and ready for use condition.
- Participate in development, refinement, and documentation of standard operating procedures.
- Manage storage and inventory of equipment parts and consumables for research and development activities.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment, adhering to company policies and procedures.
- Participate in hazard assessments, safe work planning, and emergency response protocols.
- Perform other duties as required to support the research and development team’s objectives.
Skills & Qualifications
- Post-secondary technical diploma, or equivalent education and experience, in mechanical, electrical, process, and/or industrial technology, or a related field.
- Experience performing multi-disciplinary technical tasks and working with a team.
- Experience in chemical, refinery, or other industrial operations is a strong asset.
- Solid working knowledge of electricity, mechanics, and plumbing systems.
- Demonstrated experience and confidence in the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial tools and process equipment,.
- Forklift operator certification and safety training (e.g., H2S Alive, First Aid) are considered valuable assets.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Self-motivated and highly organized, with strong time management skills and the ability to work independently.
