The Opportunity Aviva Canada Inc. has an excellent opportunity in our Small Medium and Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance business unit. Our Winnipeg branch is seeking Commercial Lines P&C Underwriters in an Intermediate or Senior level. This role is accountable for driving profitable growth through high-quality underwriting, with a focus on middle market and large commercial accounts across select industry segments. These accounts typically fall within the annual premium range of $25K to $250K. In this role, you will collaborate closely with internal partners to identify new business opportunities and deliver superior technical expertise to brokers and customers—ensuring risks are priced appropriately. You will also play a key role in mentoring and guiding junior underwriters. We will determine level based on experience. What you’ll do Intermediate Underwriter
- Underwrite new and renewal Core & Mid‑Market P&C accounts within delegated authority, ensuring profitable growth.
- Assess moderate to moderately complex risks and recommend terms, conditions, and pricing.
- Prepare referrals for risks outside authority with clear recommendations.
- Build and maintain broker relationships; participate in broker/insured meetings to support new business and renewals.
- Monitor market conditions and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.
- Maintain accurate documentation, portfolio quality, and compliance.
- Support junior staff through basic coaching when needed.
Senior Underwriter
- Independently underwrite complex Core & Mid‑Market accounts, driving top‑ and bottom‑line results.
- Act as a referral point for junior and intermediate underwriters; approve risks within expanded authority.
- Lead strategic broker/insured meetings to grow new business and retain key accounts.
- Set terms, conditions, and pricing for complex risks and negotiate renewals/new business.
- Contribute to pricing reviews, product enhancements, and guideline development.
- Identify portfolio trends and loss‑ratio concerns; recommend and implement remediation strategies.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, supporting training, development, and capability building within the team.
- Support regional portfolio and business‑development strategies.
What you’ll bring Intermediate Underwriter
- 4–6 years of P&C underwriting experience; CIP preferred or in progress.
- Strong understanding of underwriting fundamentals, pricing, and policy wording.
- Proficiency with underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication, relationship‑building, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to manage workload independently and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.
Senior Underwriter
- 7–10+ years of P&C underwriting experience; CIP/FCIP preferred.
- Expert knowledge of underwriting, pricing, and product across key segments (e.g., Manufacturing, Wholesaling, Contractors).
- Advanced understanding of underwriting philosophy, rating programs, and regulatory considerations.
- Strong negotiation, broker‑relationship, and business‑development skills.
- Proven ability to provide mentorship, deliver training, and influence underwriting decisions.
- High professionalism with a strong solutions‑focused, service‑oriented approach.
What you’ll get
- The salary band for this position ranges from $60,000 to $75,000 for an intermediate position and from $65,000 to $85,000 for a Senior. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
