Position Overview:

Our client, a respected environmental not-for-profit, is seeking a Director of Finance to join its growing leadership team. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity for a collaborative and strategic finance professional who brings both operational excellence and a mission-driven mindset. The Director of Finance will play a critical role in leading day-to-day financial operations, evolving financial systems, and ensuring strong internal controls — all in support of sustainable, community-led stewardship.

The Opportunity:

This is a key leadership role within an organization at an exciting point of transition. Our client is seeking a confident and adaptable financial leader who can build trust quickly, bring thoughtful change, and contribute to organizational strategy. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, executive leadership, and external stakeholders - playing an instrumental role in advancing the organization’s mission through financial clarity and operational integrity.

Key Responsibilities:Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic input on financial planning and organizational decision-making
  • Serve as a member of the Leadership Committee
  • Lead financial operations with a lens toward sustainability, risk, and growth

Financial Operations & Compliance

  • Oversee the full accounting cycle including A/P, A/R, payroll, journal entries, and remittances
  • Ensure tax, audit, and regulatory compliance, including CRA and charitable registration
  • Maintain and enhance financial controls, policies, and systems

Audit & Risk

  • Act as the lead contact for year-end audits and financial reviews
  • Participate in risk management and policy development to safeguard the organization’s assets and reputation

Team & Process Development

  • Provide mentorship and leadership to the Finance Specialist
  • Evaluate current systems and processes with empathy and professionalism; lead change initiatives thoughtfully
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability within the finance function

Grants & Fund Tracking (Future-Focused)

  • Potential to oversee grant budgeting, reporting, and financial compliance in future phases
  • Collaborate with fundraising and program teams to support funder reporting and analysis

Job Qualifications:

  • CPA designation is required
  • Post-secondary education in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in progressive financial leadership roles
  • Proven experience in the non-profit or charitable sector
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and comfort with various financial system tools
  • Deep understanding of financial controls, audit preparation, and compliance
  • Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Ability to navigate organizational change with emotional intelligence and tact

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • You bring both structure and heart to your work - balancing strategic thinking with operational care
  • You approach legacy systems with respect and curiosity, not criticism
  • You thrive in collaborative environments and can guide others through change with confidence and humility
  • You’re passionate about sustainability and want to use your financial expertise to support meaningful impact

Compensation & Benefits:

This role offers a base salary, 100% employer-paid extended health and dental coverage (effective Day 1), up-to a 9% employee RSP contribution (non-matching), 4 weeks vacation, 10 sick days and 3 personal days annually, and a $500 Health Spending Account.

This role is hybrid, with 2 days/week in-office preferred, in Ottawa.

If you’re an experienced Director of Finance within the not-for-profit sector, ready to join a collaborative, high-performance team who strives to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you.
