The Position We are looking to fill one full-time, temporary (until Feb 28, 2027) Labour Relations Officer I (LRO I) position in the Edmonton office, reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations. This entry-level labour relations role provides front-line support to the HSAA membership. Working closely with other Labour Relations Officers, Team Leads, and Member Resource Centre staff, the LRO I focuses on early-stage dispute resolution, member inquiries, investigative interviews, and Step 1 and 2 grievances, all while building foundational labour relations knowledge and skills. Key Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To

  • Member Inquiries & Support – Respond to day-to-day membership inquiries regarding collective agreement interpretation, workplace issues, and union processes via phone, email, and virtual or in-person meetings.
  • Early-Stage Issue Support – Assist members during early-stage workplace issues by providing information on collective agreement provisions, union processes, and available representation options.
  • Investigative Assistance – Gather facts, act for the Union in investigative interviews, and document workplace concerns through to resolution.
  • Grievance Administration – Prepare and administer grievance files including intake documentation, file tracking, and supporting materials from intake through Level 2 grievance hearings as assigned.
  • File Preparation & Documentation – Draft grievance forms, correspondence, and supporting documentation; maintain accurate records and case files within HSAA databases and case management systems.
  • Workplace Representation – Attend workplace meetings with members as a representative where appropriate, supporting members through early-stage processes with professionalism and care.
  • Member Engagement – Work collaboratively with Local Unit Executives, Member Engagers, Stewards, and other HSAA representatives to engage and mobilize the membership on campaigns and special projects.
  • Escalation & Collaboration – Escalate complex labour relations matters to the LRO Team Lead or Manager of Labour Relations and provide administrative and analytical support for grievance progression and resolution processes.

What You Bring You are an emerging labour relations professional with a genuine commitment to member advocacy and a desire to build your expertise in a dynamic union environment. You bring strong communication and organizational skills, a solid ability to manage multiple files under deadlines, and a collaborative approach to working within a fast-paced team. You handle sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy, and you are motivated to grow your skills under the guidance of experienced labour relations practitioners. You will work in a typical office setting with regular interaction with members, staff, and union representatives. You have a working knowledge of computer operating systems and databases, including intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. You can occasionally work outside regular business hours to meet members’ needs and are able to travel to member workplaces throughout Alberta as required. Maintaining a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is an ongoing occupational requirement for this position. Partial coverage for business insurance is provided per the collective agreement between HSAA and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955. Qualifications, Knowledge And Skills

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Labour Relations, Human Resources, Business Administration, Health Care, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Experience working in healthcare, unionized environments, or member advocacy roles is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals experiencing workplace concerns or conflict.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to gather, document, and present factual information accurately and clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and case management or database systems, with intermediate to advanced proficiency preferred.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with members, colleagues, and employer representatives.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required for regular travel to member workplaces.
