The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations for the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. This role manages the full accounting cycle, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, budgeting, and monthly financial statements. The Controller will partner closely with project managers, operations, and senior leadership to support informed decision-making and maintain strong financial controls within a fast-paced homebuilding environment.
_Key Responsibilities_Financial Management & Reporting
· Oversee full-cycle accounting, including general ledger maintenance, month-end and year-end close, and financial statement preparation.
· Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
· Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and treasury functions.
· Maintain and enforce internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
Construction & Project Accounting
· Manage job costing, including tracking budgets, commitments, actuals, and variances for each development or homebuilding project.
· Work with project managers to review project performance, cost overruns, change orders, and revenue recognition.
· Oversee progress draw preparation and reconciliation for lenders and other stakeholders.
· Ensure accurate allocation of construction costs, overhead, and direct expenses.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
· Oversee full-cycle payroll processing, ensuring compliance with provincial regulations and company policies.
· Manage source deductions, ROEs, T4s, and year-end payroll reconciliations.
· Administer employee benefits programs, enrollments, and updates in coordination with HR.
· Maintain payroll records and support audits as required.
Budgeting & Forecasting
· Lead the preparation of annual operating budgets and project budgets.
· Monitor actual performance against budget and provide variance analysis and insights to leadership.
· Support financial modeling for new projects, acquisitions, and strategic initiatives.
Compliance & Audit
· Coordinate year-end audit and tax filings with external auditors and accountants.
· Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, regulatory requirements, and lender reporting obligations.
· Maintain accurate documentation and prepare supporting schedules.
Leadership & Collaboration
· Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
· Collaborate with operations, development, construction, and executive teams to provide financial guidance.
· Participate in process improvement initiatives and system enhancements to streamline financial workflows.
Qualifications
· CPA designation (or working toward) preferred.
· 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in the construction or homebuilding industry.
· Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, payroll legislation, job costing, and project accounting.
· Experience with construction management or accounting software (e.g., BuilderTREND, Sage, Jonas, Yardi, QuickBooks).
· Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
Additional Considerations
· Familiarity with lender reporting, draws, and development financing is an asset.
