Summary:

  • Nearly 60 part-time workers at the City of Windsor will lose their jobs this spring.

  • The job cuts result from CUPE Local 82 revoking a memorandum of agreement that allowed part-time positions.

  • 57 temporary part-time recreational facilities attendant roles will end, with a last work day of April 21.

  • The layoffs do not affect any regular full-time employees, according to the city.

  • The city claims it complied with the agreement, but the union withdrew, leading to the job losses.

Almost 60 part-time workers at the City of Windsor will lose their jobs this spring, the city announced on Wednesday. This decision comes after the union representing outside workers revoked a key agreement.

Union Revokes Agreement Leading to Job Losses

The city stated that CUPE Local 82, which represents outside workers, revoked a memorandum of agreement on Friday. This memorandum had allowed for the employment of up to 60 part-time positions in the maintenance of community centres and arenas.

As a result, 57 temporary part-time recreational facilities attendant roles, which have been filled over the past seven months, will conclude. The last day of work for these employees is expected to be April 21.

Impact on Employees and City Response

The city emphasized that this job loss does not impact any regular full-time employees. In a statement, the city said, "The corporation has complied with all terms outlined in the memorandum of agreement and held several meetings with the union to discuss their issues. Despite fulfilling these requirements, the union ultimately decided to withdraw from the agreement."

CBC has reached out to CUPE Local 82 for comment, but no response has been reported yet.

This situation highlights the volatility in part-time and temporary employment within municipal sectors, especially as unions and employers navigate agreements that affect job security.
