Research Services under the VP Research is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Manager, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Research.

Equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) are vital to excellence in all aspects of research design and practice and across the UCalgary research ecosystem. EDIA in research strengthens the entire research enterprise, by bringing a multiplicity of perspectives, experiences, voices and approaches to projects that may not have been included otherwise, fostering increased research excellence, innovation and creativity. These values, commitments, and practices are highlighted in the UCalgary Research and Innovation Implementation Plan.

Through implementation of UCalgary's institutional Canada Research Chair (CRC) Equity Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, as well as participation in the Dimensions EDI pilot program, the EDI in Research team aims to implement best practices to sustain the participation in the research ecosystem of and address the underrepresentation of individuals from equity-deserving groups including, but not limited to: women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons, and members of LGBTQ2S+ communities. The Manager, EDI in Research will advance this initiative through development and implementation of support frameworks and guidance materials for faculties, units, and researchers addressing funding agency requirements and strengthening equitable and inclusive practices in research design, practice, and administration.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Research Services, the Manager, EDI in Research leads a team that supports institutional EDIA initiatives, including advising and collaborating on major institutional grants. This team supports the development and implementation of supports, consultation and training strategies, as well as institutional-level EDIA initiatives and commitments within the UCalgary research ecosystem, such as the CRC EDI Action Plan. The Manager, EDI in Research also has accountabilities to the Associate Vice-President Research (Inclusive Research Excellence), who is the strategic and academic lead on institutional EDIA initiatives.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversee operations for organizational change initiatives to support adoption of best practices and program requirements, both institutionally and with individual researchers.
  • Liaise with senior leadership on EDIA-related initiatives, advising on risks and opportunities in implementing current or proposed initiatives.
  • Represent the EDI in Research team to relevant stakeholders including other units in the Research Services office, the Office of the Vice-President (Research), the Office of the Provost, Faculty, and various other unit-level committees, research teams, and also external community stakeholders.
  • Act as a senior resource to peers in the Research Services Office and institutional initiatives on EDIA issues related to research, and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship.
  • Supervise direct reports within the EDI in Research team, including providing mentorship, performance management, and delegation of work when appropriate.
  • Ensure effective collaboration with major institutional grants and Faculty-level initiatives, leveraging existing institutional resources, maintaining continuity in institutional programming, and sustaining institutional capacity beyond the end of finite projects and initiatives.
  • Model and champion equitable, inclusive, and accessible professional practice for all members of the EDI in Research team, and within UCalgary initiatives.
  • Manage implementation of the institutional CRC EDI Action Plan in conjunction with senior leadership, RSO management, and other administrative units.
  • Manage integration and sustainability, in an institutional context, of the outputs and outcomes of major institutional grants, in conjunction with senior institutional leadership and the research teams.
  • Manage, and revise in conjunction with the Associate Vice-President Research (Inclusive Research Excellence), administrative processes to ensure a strong standard of compliance with the UCalgary CRC EDI Action Plan.
  • Work with staff to develop processes and frameworks to achieve and monitor EDI compliance and progress.
  • Maintain in-depth understanding of EDIA requirements, in particular as it relates to the CRC and other Tri-council programs.
  • Oversee the ongoing maturation of consultation and capacity building delivery to embed EDIA into internal programs, research administration processes, and individual research projects and teams.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's Degree (preferred) in disciplines and professional practice dealing directly with concepts, methodologies, and/or policy understanding that relate to EDIA subject matter expertise (a combination of an undergraduate degree and relevant career experience will be considered);
  • Minimum of five years of related experience supporting research programs and facilitating EDI initiatives;
  • Minimum of two years of experience directly supervising staff, including performance management;
  • Knowledge of federal research funding programs and research administration;
  • Demonstrated track record of working effectively with and for members of equity-deserving groups (women and gender minorities, racialized/persons, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community);
  • Demonstrated commitment, proactive efforts, and positive outcomes in implementing EDI actions and strategies;
  • Knowledge of EDIA and human rights policies, federal and provincial legislation, and best practices;
  • Experience with EDIA programs for post-secondary initiatives;
  • Experience developing process and monitoring frameworks, and proficiency in evaluation methods to measure effectiveness of EDIA approaches and programs;
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs, including design of learning objectives and pedagogical strategies;
  • Experience in organizational change management and communication planning;
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively to deliver EDIA-related objectives;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior leadership to ensure efficient two-way communication of complex information and strategic guidance, sometimes in highly sensitive situations;
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities);
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Ability to work independently, planning and prioritizing own work, in a team setting;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey EDIA concepts and strategies, as well as institutional commitments and priorities;
  • Ability to build and sustain trusting and respectful relationships in a variety of settings across diverse stakeholders, both internal and external to UCalgary;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Commitment to continued learning and implementation work as informed by changing university and external processes.
