The Manager, Engagement reports to the Director, Community and leads the planning, coordination,
delivery, and documentation of NexGen’s Indigenous and community engagement activities. The role
provides strategic and operational leadership to the Engagement team and supports respectful,
mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous Nations, communities, and other external
stakeholders.
The role advises the Director, Community and VP, Community on engagement risks, emerging issues,
capacity requirements, and opportunities; integrates Indigenous and community commitments into
Rook I Project planning; and supports regulatory engagement, agreement implementation,
community initiatives, and NexGen’s environmental, social, and governance objectives.
Schedule
20 months, full-time. Attendance at community meetings, events, and engagement activities may
occasionally be required outside regular business hours.
Environment
Work is performed in the Saskatoon office, community, meeting, event, and project-site environments. The role requires regular interaction with Indigenous Nations and communities and periodic presence at the Rook I site.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Engagement Management
- Lead and execute NexGen's Indigenous, community, public, and regulatory engagement strategy.
- Translate engagement commitments and objectives into actionable plans and team priorities.
- Represent the organization at community, stakeholder, and regulatory engagement events.
- Lead or support internal and external committees, ensuring commitments and action items are delivered.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements, engagement trends, and best practices.
- Build and maintain respectful, transparent, and mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous Nations, community leaders, and stakeholders.
- Guide and support team members responsible for community and Indigenous relations.
- Manage complex stakeholder issues and address community concerns effectively.
- Oversee community information sessions and engagement activities across northern Saskatchewan.
- Promote meaningful Indigenous engagement practices throughout the organization.
- Oversee the planning, coordination, execution, and documentation of engagement activities and events.
- Manage engagement materials, presentations, meeting records, and event logistics.
- Ensure commitments, decisions, discussions, and follow-up actions are accurately documented and tracked.
- Monitor timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder commitments to ensure completion.
- Lead regulatory engagement activities supporting environmental assessment, permitting, and project development.
- Serve as NexGen's Regulatory Lead on environmental and stakeholder committees.
- Ensure Indigenous and community commitments are integrated across project teams and workstreams.
- Support regulatory submissions, approvals, engagement reporting, and ESG disclosures.
- Monitor regulatory developments and proactively address potential risks or delays.
- Support implementation and management of Impact Benefit Agreements, Mutual Benefit Agreements, and other community commitments.
- Track agreement obligations, monitor progress, and coordinate follow-up actions.
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with agreements and community commitments.
- Oversee community investment programs, sponsorships, and related initiatives.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on engagement risks, stakeholder concerns, and emerging issues.
- Assess relationship, regulatory, operational, and reputational risks.
- Develop mitigation strategies and support informed decision-making and contingency planning.
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop members of the Engagement team.
- Establish priorities, assign work, monitor performance, and ensure high-quality deliverables.
- Conduct performance reviews and support employee development planning.
- Assess team capacity and recommend additional resources when needed.
Budget & Reporting
- Develop and manage annual engagement budgets.
- Prepare forecasts and monitor expenditures against budget targets.
- Identify variances and recommend corrective actions.
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with HSEC standards.
- Ensure engagement activities, travel, meetings, and community events are conducted safely.
- Support the integration of community, environmental, and safety considerations into organizational decision-making.
Required
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous Relations, Community Development, Communications, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Business, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Progressive experience in Indigenous relations, community engagement, stakeholder relations, regulatory engagement, or a related field.
- Experience leading and developing teams, including coaching, performance management, and delivering results.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous Nations, communities, leaders, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Indigenous and community engagement principles, protocols, and best practices.
- Experience planning and delivering engagement programs, consultations, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Strong communication, organization, documentation, risk management, and problem-solving skills.
- Sound judgment and discretion in managing sensitive information and stakeholder matters.
- Strong digital literacy using Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with stakeholder management systems and ESG reporting.
- Experience in mining, natural resources, energy, infrastructure, or other regulated industries.
- Knowledge of northern Saskatchewan communities and Indigenous relations in the region.
- Experience with Indigenous Impact Benefit Agreements, Mutual Benefit Agreements, or similar agreements.
- Experience tracking engagement commitments and managing stakeholder information.
- Experience planning and delivering engagement events and programs in northern or remote communities.
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically to Indigenous communities, the Rook I site, and other locations as required.
- Ability to provide satisfactory completion of a Pre-Employment Drug and Alcohol Test as required for the Rook I project.
- Flexibility to attend meetings, community events, and engagement activities outside of regular business hours when needed.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license and ability to travel independently.
