Meridia Recruitment is pleased to be partnering with CME to support the recruitment of an Occupational Health and Safety Officer based in their head office in Dartmouth, NS.

Role Description

In this position, you will take ownership of occupational health and safety programs, ensuring they are effectively developed, implemented, and continuously improved. You will play a central role in identifying and mitigating workplace risks through regular inspections, structured risk assessments, and incident investigations. A strong focus of the role will be building engagement across teams through practical training, clear communication, and ongoing safety awareness initiatives. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate compliance documentation, supporting audit processes, and acting as a key point of contact for regulatory requirements and reporting.

  • **Key Responsibilities:**Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures in line with applicable legislation
  • Conduct workplace inspections and risk assessments to identify hazards and drive corrective actions
  • Lead incident, accident, and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and reporting
  • Deliver safety training sessions and awareness programs for employees and leadership teams
  • Maintain accurate records related to inspections, incidents, audits, and compliance activities
  • Support liaison with regulatory bodies and ensure timely and accurate submissions
  • Promote continuous improvement in health and safety practices across the organization
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures

Qualifications

You bring a practical, people-focused approach to occupational health and safety, with the ability to connect credibility with approachability in how you engage others. You build trust quickly across diverse teams by being present, consistent, and grounded in day-to-day realities on the floor. Your communication style is clear and adaptable, and you know how to tailor your message whether you are speaking with frontline staff, supervisors, or leadership. You focus on creating understanding and buy-in for safety initiatives, not just compliance.

You are organized and detail-oriented, with a good eye for identifying potential risks early and taking a practical approach to addressing them. You are comfortable working independently and managing your priorities, while also being a collaborative team player who works well across departments. You take a supportive, hands-on approach to training and coaching, helping others understand how safety applies in a real and practical way in their day-to-day work.

  • Your qualifications include: Post-secondary education and/or relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in occupational health and safety, ideally within a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety legislation and standards
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, inspections, and safety audits
  • Proven ability to investigate incidents and prepare clear, detailed reports
  • Experience with root cause analysis and formal incident investigation processes is preferred
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, particularly in training environments
  • Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with safety management systems
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments
