The Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) Branch is dedicated to protecting Alberta’s environment by undertaking monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on the environmental impacts from oil sands development activities in the oil sands region of Alberta. Collaborating with governments, industry, academia, and Indigenous communities, the OSM Branch delivers comprehensive assessments of monitoring data to inform decision makers, management, policy and regulatory action. Role Responsibilities The Oil Sands Monitoring Branch is seeking a highly qualified Junior Hydrogeologist to contribute to Alberta’s long-term groundwater monitoring, research, and reporting initiatives. This position will enhance the scientific capacity of the OSM Program in hydrogeology, groundwater management, and cumulative effects assessment. The Junior Hydrogeologist will apply advanced scientific methods to monitor, evaluate, and report on groundwater quality and quantity, supporting evidence-based decision-making for government, industry, and Indigenous communities. Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design and continuous improvement of groundwater monitoring programs, protocols, and conceptual models.
- Collaborate with Indigenous communities to support groundwater monitoring initiatives and address concerns.
- Develop annual and multi-year monitoring plans, budgets, and innovative studies to assess groundwater conditions.
- Deliver groundwater monitoring programs including field investigations, design and supervision of monitoring well construction and installations, sampling, data validation, and analysis.
- Evaluate hydrogeological data independently and collaboratively, preparing technical reports, program reports, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
- Apply hydrogeological modeling and advanced numerical/statistical analyses to assess local, regional, and cumulative impacts on groundwater resources.
- Support development of hydrogeological research programs that advance understanding of groundwater science in the oil sands region of Alberta.
- Develop, update, and author Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical guidance documents to support consistent implementation of groundwater monitoring and data management protocols.
- Review and provide technical feedback on reports and deliverables prepared by collaborators and partners on behalf of the OSM Groundwater Monitoring Program to ensure scientific accuracy, consistency, and alignment with program objectives.

QualificationsRequirements:Education
- Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Contaminant Hydrogeology, Physical Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience in groundwater and contaminant hydrogeology, groundwater research, monitoring, and modelling.
Equivalency
- PhD in a scientific discipline related to the position; no experience required.
- University graduation in a related field, plus 4 years of directly related experience.
Other
- A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
Assets
- PhD with post-doctoral experience, demonstrating advanced knowledge and research expertise in groundwater science.
- Proficiency in data evaluation and analysis software (e.g., Excel, MATLAB, R, Python) for managing large environmental datasets.
- Expertise in drilling techniques, including installation of monitoring and production wells (drilling oversight, lithologic logging, slug tests, pumping tests) as well as soil and groundwater sampling procedures.
- Experience using groundwater monitoring equipment and instruments (e.g., pressure transducers, water-level loggers for sampling, data collection and field measurements.
- Knowledge of Alberta’s hydrostratigraphy and experience with groundwater modeling software such as FEFLOW, HYDROGEOSPHERE, AQTESOLVMODFLOW ArcGIS and QGIS.
- Strong technical writing skills for report preparation and data interpretation (e.g., hydrographs, groundwater contouring).
- Eligibility for registration as a Geoscientist-in-Training (G.I.T.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with APEGA is an asset.

The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling 36.25 hours per week. The Junior Hydrogeologist works in both office and field settings, with frequent travel to remote locations in Alberta’s oil sands region. The role may involve extended field stays, physically demanding tasks such as site visits, sampling, and well installations, and operation of 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, boats, and specialized field equipment. Flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and seasonal peaks may be required. The position involves collaboration with Indigenous communities, volunteers, and multi-disciplinary teams, with strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
