The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. About the role

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Accounting Administrator will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, this position is responsible for the full-cycle accounting of the Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (FCMHR—a non-profit charitable organization), from day-to-day accounting operations to the preparation of financial statements and audit requirements.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker, and innovator who will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

What you will do

  • Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Is responsible for pledged gift management, for both the FCMHR and CMHR (Canadian Museum for Human Rights), reconciliation of donation records between the financial and fundraising systems, and variance analysis of income and expenses.
  • Supports the day-to-day accounting operations of the CMHR, including financial accounting and expense processing.
  • Performs gift management duties, including entering initial pledges, coordinating reminders, processing gift and pledge payments, posting transactions, and issuing receipts and letters for all donations.
  • Completes accounting and reconciliation procedures.
  • Prepares bank deposits and posts bank entries.
  • Prepares and sends out invoices/payment reminders, collects accounts receivable, and processes and records payments.
  • Processes accounts payable, including invoice authorization, verification, financial coding and processing of EFTs.
  • Prepares supporting working papers for quarter-end/year-end financial statements and audit requirements.
  • Supports the Director, Finance with:
  • developing budget plan, as required;
  • drafting long-term cash flow projections;
  • drafting quarter-end/year-end financial statements (including notes);
  • preparing annual T3010 tax return;
  • drafting and/or implementing policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties including but not limited to assisting external auditors and taking part in process improvement initiatives including system implementation testing and other administrative duties.

What we’re looking for

  • Completed accounting-related post-secondary education, or working towards a Professional Accounting Designation.
  • A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience including full-cycle accounting, accrual accounting, accounts payable functions and financial statement preparation.
  • Not-for-profit experience is considered a strong asset.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, specifically with Microsoft Excel (Intermediate Level – X-Lookups, Sumifs, creating reports, pivot tables).
  • Experience working with an integrated accounting system.
  • Working knowledge of Retail Sales Tax (Manitoba) and GST.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and assist with process improvements.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities and assignments in order to meet deadlines.
  • High ethical standards and professionalism.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Discretion, tact and diplomacy.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate with proficiency in both official languages, oral and written.
  • Raiser’s Edge experience an asset.

Official Language Proficiency:

  • Bilingual non-imperative

Other

  • Will require irregular hours and overtime (evenings, weekends) around quarter-end, year-end and during new system implementations and/or upgrades.
  • Routinely requires lengthy periods at a desk in an office environment.
