The Hidden Literacy Crisis
Over half of Quebecers lack the literacy skills needed to understand complex documents like workplace instructions, contracts, or newspaper-length articles. This problem is often invisible and taboo, even to those close to the person.
Economic Impact
Economist Pierre Langlois, who authored the report, warns that jobs are becoming more technical, making it harder for those with weak reading skills to upskill. The Quebec Employers' Council notes that both workers and employers lose out. Improving reading skills could boost Quebec's economy by $5.9 billion.
Breaking the Taboo
Patrick Lutzy, president of the Literacy Foundation's board, emphasizes the need to address this invisible issue. Without intervention, many workers will be left behind in an increasingly automated job market.
