Boost Your Journalism Career with The Globe and Mail

Are you an early- to mid-career journalist aiming to elevate your career? Applications are now open for The Globe and Mail's 2026 Summer Jobs Program. We are hiring for 10 contract editorial positions across the newsroom. Successful candidates will be compensated according to the newsroom union's collective agreement, with a current starting rate of $1,197.79 per week.

These roles are not internships. Summer staff members cover for full-time Globe and Mail journalists during the busy summer vacation period, which lasts 12 weeks from early June through Labour Day in 2026.

Available Positions to Apply For

  • Reporting: Pitch ideas, cover stories, and produce features for news, Report on Business, and other sections.
  • Editing: Collaborate with reporters on structural edits to ensure stories are accurate, clear, and engaging.
  • Programming: Handle digital and print tasks like writing headlines, managing homepages, sending news alerts, copy editing, and making curation decisions based on news judgment and audience data.
  • Visuals: Join a multidisciplinary team of designers, developers, photo and video editors, data journalists, and graphic artists working across all coverage areas.

All placements provide opportunities to enhance your skills and develop new ones in a challenging, fast-paced, and supportive newsroom environment. Many of The Globe's full-time staff began their careers through this program.

Successful candidates will be assigned a mentor for the summer and have chances to network with journalists across the newsroom. There may also be opportunities to gain experience in departments outside your primary role.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

To qualify, you must have previous journalism experience, which could include freelance writing and editing, work on school publications, or personal ventures like newsletters or blogs. Recent postsecondary graduates and students in their graduating year are encouraged to apply. We also welcome journalists who have made an impact without formal journalism education or traditional media experience.

To apply, email the following to summerjobs2026@globeandmail.com by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025:

  • Your résumé as an attachment, highlighting relevant experience, especially in news or business journalism.
  • A brief explanation (maximum 100 words) as an attachment, showcasing your storytelling skills and why you should be chosen.
  • Three examples of your work with links.

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada through September 2026. Indicate the role you are applying for in the email subject line. If applying for multiple roles, submit separate emails, each specifying the role in the subject line.

Due to the high volume of applications, we cannot respond to each one. Those selected for interviews will be contacted by Nov. 30.
