The AI Revolution: Could 40% of Jobs Be at Risk by 2033?

The Impact of AI on Global Employment
The global artificial intelligence market is projected to reach $4.8 trillion by 2033, according to a recent report from the UNCTAD. While AI is creating vast opportunities, it also poses significant risks, particularly in terms of job displacement and inequality.
The report warns that 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected by AI, with productivity gains coming at the cost of employment for many. Interestingly, unlike previous technology waves that primarily impacted blue-collar jobs, this time, knowledge-intensive sectors are at the highest risk.
Advanced Economies at Risk
The report suggests that advanced economies will be the hardest hit, although they are better equipped to leverage AI’s benefits compared to developing nations. It highlights that the advantages of AI-driven automation often favor capital over labor, potentially widening economic disparities.
Rebeca Grynspan, the agency chief, emphasized the need for people-centered AI development and called for international cooperation to create a global AI framework. She noted, "History has shown that while technological progress drives economic growth, it does not necessarily ensure equitable income distribution."
The Growing Market of AI
In 2023, frontier technologies, including AI, represented a $2.5 trillion market, projected to grow to $16.4 trillion in the next decade. However, access to AI technology and expertise is concentrated among a few economies, with 100 firms in the US and China accounting for 40% of global R&D spending.
The Call for Action
The UNCTAD urges countries to act swiftly by investing in digital infrastructure and AI governance. They stress that AI is not merely about job replacement; it can also create new industries and empower workers. Reskilling and upskilling are vital to ensure that AI enhances employment opportunities rather than diminishing them.
Furthermore, the report highlights the absence of 118 countries—mostly in the Global South—from major AI governance discussions, stressing the importance of their inclusion to ensure fair progress in AI regulation and ethical frameworks.
