In addition to crafting beds, Restwell Mattress is also creating new employment opportunities, thanks to a recent $400,000 investment from the provincial government.
The Surrey-based business will use the funds to purchase advanced equipment that enhances its ability to compress, fold, and roll thicker mattresses. Several production stations will see significant reductions in physical strain on employees while achieving more consistent production.
These upgrades allow the company to hire 10 additional workers and avoid outsourcing parts of the production process, said Restwell Mattress controller Tom Witowich.
"We’re thankful to have received the support from the B.C. Manufacturing Jobs Fund to further invest in advanced manufacturing that strengthens the Canadian mattress industry and keeps production close to home. Together, we’re building a more resilient future for both our employees and the market we serve."
This funding is part of the province’s Look West strategy, aimed at creating more jobs and major projects throughout B.C. amid intensifying economic threats from other countries. Jobs and Economic Growth Minister Ravi Kahlon said this plan will result in more dollars in the pockets of B.C. residents.
"We know B.C. can create incredible products, and by supporting manufacturing, we can get more local products made with local materials, in national and international markets."
The latest funding also includes a $200,000 contribution to Abbotsford’s Binquip MFG Solutions, enabling the company to hire an additional 27 people and purchase new equipment to diversify its product line.
Kahlon noted these two investments will generate as much as $4.7 million in total capital for the province, particularly benefiting Fraser Valley communities.
