Struggling to Find Summer Jobs? Youth Unemployment Hits 15% in Central Okanagan - Here's How to Stand Out

Summer Jobs Hard to Find for Youth in Central Okanagan

Finding a summer job is proving to be a significant challenge for many young people in the Central Okanagan region. With the unemployment rate for those aged 15 to 24 hovering around 15%, opportunities are scarcer than in previous years. The overall jobless rate in Kelowna increased to 7% in March 2026, and according to Statistics Canada, youth unemployment across British Columbia has climbed to 15.6%.

Key Factors Contributing to the Shortage

Samantha Blair from the YMCA of Southern Interior B.C. notes that while there are some opportunities in sectors like orchards, there's a noticeable lack in tourism-related jobs that were more abundant in the past. Additionally, many entry-level positions now require certifications such as Food Safe or WHMIS, creating another hurdle for first-time job seekers.

How to Gain an Edge in a Competitive Market

Simply handing out resumes or filling out online applications is no longer enough. Alison Gibson, dean of careers and community at Okanagan College, emphasizes the importance of a proactive approach:

  • Build a strong LinkedIn profile
  • Enhance your application strategies
  • Develop volunteer experience
  • Pursue additional training to expand your work experience

These steps are crucial for students and young adults looking to secure employment in today's tight job market.

Support Programs Available

You don't have to navigate this alone. The YMCA offers several programs designed to help young people get started, including Jumpstart to Employment. This program assists youth aged 16 to 30 by providing five different certifications, a living wage during attendance, and support with resumes and interview skills.

Once participants secure work, the YMCA follows up with employers to help retain new staff members.

Okanagan College provides free training to its students, focusing on confidence, time management, and job-seeking skills. Alternatively, WorkBC offers job programs for individuals aged 16 to 29, providing additional resources and support.
