Steel Tariffs Devastate Jobs in Southwestern Ontario: The Painful Reality

The Impact of U.S. Steel Tariffs
The 25% tariff on Canadian steel is already being painfully felt in southwestern Ontario. Ingersoll, a town reliant on goods exported to the U.S., has seen more than a dozen layoffs at Sivaco, a steel product manufacturer, with warnings of more potential job losses if these tariffs remain in place.
Currently, Sivaco employs 100 people and is facing a critical situation. A banner outside its facility highlights its 50-year history in Ingersoll, but the future looks bleak as the company warns of further layoffs.

The trade war has created ominous news for local businesses. GM Cami and its suppliers are the biggest concern for officials, but the impact reaches multiple small and medium businesses that rely on American trade.
A Wake-Up Call
Al Simm, a past president of the local Chamber of Commerce, sees this as a wake-up call for many businesses. He emphasizes that government support will be crucial to help smaller communities as the impact of these tariffs deepens. Without intervention, he fears there will be more job losses.
“It’s going to hurt. It’s going to hurt those families, if people are laid off,” Simm stated.
Simm's office plans to direct impacted employees to community supports and offer financial assistance to small businesses struggling to survive.
Sivaco's Efforts
In an effort to keep its workers employed, Sivaco is urging for continued government pressure and is demanding that all new institutional and infrastructure projects use only Canadian steel. Simm echoes this sentiment, advocating for buying Canadian to support local workers and businesses.
“It’s unfortunate that, you know, these companies are impacted. Nobody expected this,” Simm added, highlighting the chaos caused by the trade situation with the U.S.

Conclusion
The situation remains dire, with Sivaco and other local businesses trying hard to maintain orders and capture new customers in Canada amidst the turmoil.
