A Quebec City bar has ignited a firestorm of debate after posting a job advertisement that explicitly sought a barmaid who was not 'woke,' 'pro-Liberal,' 'pro-CAQ,' or supportive of COVID-19 health measures. The ad, which appeared on Facebook, has since been removed following widespread criticism.
The owner of Le Bar Sport Le Vegas, Richard Poulin, defended his stance, arguing for the right to select employees based on personal criteria. 'We’re not in the 1960s and 1970s anymore,' Poulin stated, questioning whether he has the right to choose his staff without hiding his preferences.
Legal experts weigh in, with employment lawyer Marie-Michelle Savard highlighting that the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms prohibits discrimination in hiring, including based on political beliefs. 'If a person is rejected because of their political opinions, they can appeal,' Savard explained.
The reaction from the industry has been one of surprise. Renaud Poulin of the Corporation des propriétaires de bars, brasseries et tavernes du Québec (CPBBTQ) expressed astonishment at the bar's hiring criteria, noting that establishments typically prioritize availability over political convictions. It was also revealed that Le Bar Sport Le Vegas is no longer a member of the CPBBTQ, limiting the organization's ability to intervene.
