Staffing changes at the Conseil Scolaire Public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario board are set to take effect by September, sparking concerns over the impact on school services. According to CUPE 4865 and the Ontario School Board Council of Unions, which represent the board workers, these changes will increase pressure on education workers and reduce critical support for students, staff, and families.
In a news release on July 3, the union revealed that the board plans to eliminate five secondary school secretary positions by converting existing 12-month roles into 10-month positions, effective August 30. Additionally, two educational assistant positions may be cut. These cuts affect 215 education workers represented by CUPE 4865.
CUPE 4865 President Mitch Gagnon criticized the decision, stating, "Instead of investing in the frontline workers who support students every day, the board is reducing services and placing even more pressure on our schools." Notably, the board has recently hired a new supervisor and a maintenance administrator, increasing the number of administrators from two to five.
The Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU) argues that these cuts are part of a broader pattern driven by chronic underfunding of education in Ontario since 2018.
