A new seniors' home in Cambridge is set to transform elder care and create significant employment opportunities. The Ed and Karen Nowak Long-Term Care Home officially opened on June 16, adding 192 new resident spaces and creating 200 good-paying jobs in the region.
Located at the corner of Concession Road and Langs Drive in Preston, the facility is a redevelopment of the Fairview Mennonite Seniors Home. It features six distinct resident home areas, including a specialized section for up to 32 residents with their own dining and activity areas, designed for a more intimate living environment. The home also boasts two landscaped courtyards and operates under a campus of care model promoting healthy, active living for seniors who are generally healthy and able to manage daily activities independently.
With Cambridge home to over 15,000 residents aged 70 or older (2022 census), this new facility addresses critical long-term care needs. It is part of the Ontario government's broader initiative to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care spaces as outlined in the 2026 Ontario Budget. As of April, 26,421 new and redeveloped beds are completed or under construction across 165 projects province-wide.
The project is a significant job creator, offering full-time positions in nursing, support work, programming, administration, and nutrition services. Cambridge MPP Brian Riddell emphasized the importance of supporting seniors, while Elaine Shantz, President and CEO of Fairview Mennonite Homes, noted that the expansion transforms lives by providing quality care and peace of mind for families.
