Netflix Animation Studio Opens in Vancouver

Is your dream to work in animation for Netflix? If you live in Vancouver, you won't have to move to make those silver-screen dreams a reality.

Netflix celebrated its grand opening of the Netflix Animation Studios (NAS) in Vancouver on Wednesday, April 8, featuring comments from key executives like Dan Lin, chairman of film, and Hannah Minghella, head of feature animation and family film. Several government officials also joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including Anne Kang, B.C.'s minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport, and Vancouver Coun. Sarah Kirby-Yung.

Over 450 people currently work with the company's animation studio in Vancouver, and the studio's construction contributed over $50 million to the province's GDP. Ongoing operations are expected to contribute an additional $100 million annually, according to Netflix.

"This is an exciting new chapter for our studio," said Hannah Minghella. "Our new Vancouver hub is an investment in the long-term growth of Netflix Animation Studios globally and reflects our ongoing commitment to make original animated movies for fans around the world."

B.C. Premier David Eby also visited the office, welcoming the company and highlighting its economic contribution. "This facility will create hundreds of good-paying jobs and bring over $100M to BC’s economy – all while producing the movies and shows we all love to enjoy," he said in a post on Facebook.

The 110,000-square-foot facility is located at 110 E 5th Ave. in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

Netflix Vancouver Jobs

With a large facility opening in Vancouver, you might be searching for a new job with the company. But you may notice that the Netflix careers in Vancouver look a bit sparse (15 postings). The company could start hiring more animation staff in the upcoming months as its operations expand.

If you don't see a current Netflix job in Vancouver posted within a specific department, you can submit your information and/or portfolio for consideration. The company says it stores the information in a database and will reach out in the future if you're a match.

Some positions are currently available, including the Head of Character Effects, who will work inside the new studio as "the show-based leader for all character-related secondary motion, including hair, fur, feathers, cloth, and garments." Netflix is also looking for an Animation Supervisor, trusted with character development.

The company also has job listings for its company at large (outside of animation), such as an N‑Tech Manager, Technology Systems and Operations (Creative Tech) in its Games and VFX studios.

What's the Next Big Project for Netflix?

The Vancouver office's next big animation product is for the feature film Steps, "a reimagining of the story of Cinderella’s sisters," voiced by Ali Wong, Stephanie Hsu, and Amanda Seyfried.

Netflix's adaptation spins the "evil stepsisters" narrative, with Wong's character Lilith taking the blame for hijacking a Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand and turning her sister Margot (played by Hsu) into a frog. The kingdom then unravels into chaos in the hands of a "prince-obsessed mean girl." But, of course, this is just where the story kicks into the next fairytale gear.
