Massive Hiring Wave: 3,000+ High-Paying Jobs at New Electric Vehicle Battery Plant in Ontario – Apply Now!

A massive electric vehicle battery plant in St. Thomas is set to create thousands of new jobs, with a strong focus on hiring from the Waterloo Region and across southwestern Ontario. PowerCo Canada, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, is leading this initiative, aiming to hire as many as 3,000 employees over the next few years.

Key Hiring Plans and Progress

Norman Wickboldt, the Chief Human Resources Officer of PowerCo Canada, stated, "The strategy is to attract as many workers from southwestern Ontario as we can for the new jobs we’re creating." The company has already hired 250 employees and plans to add another 150 jobs by the end of the year.

Diverse Job Opportunities

The available positions span a wide range of high-skilled roles, including engineers, chemists, IT professionals, and other specialized fields. Wickboldt added, "We intend to focus on construction over the coming months, which will include engineering jobs, sustainability roles, and the first round of shopfloor workers."

Investment and Facility Details

PowerCo Canada is investing $7 billion in the St. Thomas facility, with groundbreaking scheduled for the coming months. The plant is expected to open in 2027, marking a significant boost to the local economy.

Recruitment and Outreach Efforts

To attract talent, the company has launched an extensive recruitment campaign, featuring billboards across Waterloo Region, London, Windsor, and along the 401 corridor. This effort is part of a broader strategy to expand their reach throughout southwestern Ontario.

Competitive Compensation and Benefits

Shuja Qadri, PowerCo Canada’s head of talent acquisition, emphasized the competitive nature of the job offers: "We’ve compared pay with a lot of advanced manufacturing competitors. We have a robust package, including relocation assistance and comprehensive benefits."

Training and Development for All Skill Levels

While the focus is on next-generation jobs, there are opportunities for unskilled workers as well. Qadri explained, "There’s an assessment set up to provide training and growth for unskilled workers. We’re working with local community partners to ensure they have the skills needed to fill the gaps."

Current and Future Openings

The hiring process is already underway, with more than 50 jobs currently available. Hundreds of roles are expected to open this year, and thousands more will be added as the plant scales up to full operation.
