Canadian Job Market Takes a Hit
Statistics Canada reports that Canada's economy lost 33,000 jobs in March, marking the largest decline since January 2022. The unemployment rate also saw a slight increase, rising to 6.7% from 6.6% in February.
This downturn in employment reverses some of the gains made at the end of last year and into January. The data reveals a significant trend: 62,000 full-time jobs were lost, although this was partially offset by an increase in part-time employment.
Sector-Specific Job Losses
- The wholesale and retail trade sector suffered a loss of 29,000 jobs in March, counterbalancing a rise of 51,000 jobs in February.
- Additionally, the information, culture, and recreation sector witnessed a decline of 20,000 jobs.
