Ken Griffin's Stark Warning: Why Tariffs Won't Revive American Manufacturing Jobs

Citadel founder Ken Griffin has sharply criticized the Trump administration’s trade policies, arguing that tariffs will not restore American manufacturing jobs as anticipated. During a talk at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, he emphasized the need for the country to leverage its strengths instead.

“He dreams of giving people their dignity back, and I have to applaud him for having that dream,” Griffin remarked about President Donald Trump. However, he stated that the dream of creating more manufacturing jobs is unrealistic: “These jobs are not coming back to America.”

With the current unemployment rate at 4%, Griffin noted that America has evolved beyond these jobs. He expressed concern that the ongoing trade war has turned into a “nonsensical” situation, jeopardizing the U.S. global brand due to the current tariff strategies.

Griffin suggested that the U.S. should focus on its strengths, such as intellectual property and content creation, rather than attempting to revive factory jobs that are increasingly being automated. He highlighted the financial benefits of high-skilled jobs compared to low-paying factory positions.

At a recent conference in Beijing, a senior Chinese official questioned why U.S. trade policy aims to support low-paying factory jobs, suggesting that the U.S. should aspire to be a world leader rather than mimic China’s model.

Griffin acknowledged that the U.S. has not adequately supported those displaced by globalization, noting that many of Trump’s supporters felt left behind by the economy. He also warned about the potential job losses due to artificial intelligence impacting white-collar workers, stressing the importance of providing support in these transitions.

Despite the challenges, Griffin stated that the U.S. has gained more from globalization than China, and the trade war has damaged international relations. Recently, the Trump administration paused plans for broader tariffs, providing an opportunity to reassess how to create jobs and dignity for those affected by globalization while reaffirming America’s role in the world.
