Embracing the Chaos of Multiple Roles

In the world of theater, the phrase "you had one job" is often thrown around, but for Justina Aveyard, a performer in the Tony-winning musical Moulin Rouge, that couldn't be further from the truth. She juggles six different roles as a swing performer, showcasing the dynamic and unpredictable nature of her career.

The Unpredictable Life of a Swing Performer

Aveyard, originally from Toronto, describes her daily routine as anything but routine. "Yesterday, even, I was planning to go on for one track, and I got a call, maybe at 11, that I was going to be on for a different track," she shared with CTV News. This last-minute shift is a common occurrence, requiring her to adapt quickly and embrace the uncertainty. "So, I think it's just like, 'OK, I've got this.'"

Thriving in the Unknown

One of the most exciting aspects of her job is not knowing which role she'll play until the last minute. As the musical prepares to take the stage in Calgary from January 6 to 11 at the Jubilee Auditorium, Aveyard admits she's unsure of her part for the January 6 performance. "That's kind of the fun of it, too," she said, highlighting how this unpredictability adds a layer of excitement to her work.

Navigating Challenges with Creativity

Aveyard's role isn't without its challenges. She recalls moments of confusion, such as being in the wrong wing before a performance. "I have been in the wrong wing, and I'm like, 'I'm in the wrong wing!' and you have to be like, 'How am I going to get to where I need to go?'" she explained. Instead of seeing this as a setback, she views it as "a fun game to figure it out as you go," demonstrating her ability to problem-solve under pressure and maintain a positive attitude.

The Bigger Picture: Skills for the Modern Workforce

Her experience as a swing performer offers valuable insights for anyone in the job market. It emphasizes the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and quick thinking—skills that are increasingly relevant in today's fast-paced work environments. By mastering multiple roles, Aveyard not only excels in her artistic career but also sets an example for how to thrive in roles that demand versatility and resilience.
