Steward Berroa's Journey to the MLB
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Steward Berroa, a young outfielder for the Toronto Blue Jays, reflects on his challenging path to the major leagues. Early mornings at his locker are filled with memories from his off-seasons, where he juggled various odd jobs to support his baseball career.
A Hard Life in the Off-Season
Each winter, Berroa would return to the Dominican Republic after a season in the U.S. minor leagues. To make ends meet, he worked for his uncle, Ali, a contractor in Massachusetts. Tasks included painting and drywall installation, often for minimal pay, but it was essential for survival.
“Not good, honestly. But it was something,” Berroa recalls about his earnings.
One year, he secured a factory job in New Hampshire, where he quickly rose from hauling puzzle pieces to a desk job by demonstrating his reliability.
Financial Struggles and Dedication
Living with his mother and sister, Berroa saved diligently to afford food and training. He often hired coaches from his El Niche Academy days to help him improve.
“Every dollar counts,” he emphasizes, recalling his modest signing bonus of $10,000 with the Blue Jays in 2016.
The Call-Up to the Big Leagues
Despite challenges, Berroa's positive attitude and relentless energy caught the attention of his teammates and coaches. After his first major-league call-up in 2024, he embraced each moment, even without frequent playing time.
“Every day in the big leagues was the best day of my life,” Berroa said, highlighting his enthusiasm.
Overcoming Adversity
Berroa's journey wasn't without setbacks. He faced injuries, cultural adjustments, and struggles with performance. However, each time he was demoted, he returned stronger, proving his resilience.
“I’ve never had a lot of expectations,” he admits, recognizing the odds stacked against players like him.
A Player with Heart
Despite being considered undersized, Berroa has shown his talent, finishing with impressive stats in the minors. His determination to improve and adapt has kept him in the game.
“I worked hard for it, I got it, and I enjoy every moment,” he states, reflecting on his career.
Looking Ahead
This spring, Berroa is making an impression, showcasing his skills and determination. His journey is a testament to the power of hard work and passion in achieving one’s dreams.
“Do I want to go back to a regular job? Or do I want to keep playing baseball and live my dream?” Berroa’s answer is clear, as he continues to chase his dreams on the field.
