Dundee University to Slash 632 Jobs Amidst £35 Million Deficit Crisis
Dundee University Job Cuts
Dundee University is set to cut 632 jobs as part of efforts to address a £35 million deficit for this financial year. The announcement was made by interim principal Shane O'Neill during a meeting attended by staff both in-person and online.
This drastic measure represents approximately 20% of the university's workforce, which exceeds 3,000 employees. Prof O'Neill has indicated that an external investigation will be launched to assess the causes of the financial difficulties the university is facing.

Former principal Prof Iain Gillespie had previously warned staff in November that job losses were “inevitable,” attributing the situation to an extremely challenging period for the UK higher education sector. Gillespie himself resigned shortly after facing scrutiny over a £7,000 business trip to Hong Kong.
Additionally, Amanda Millar, chairwoman of the university's court, also resigned last month.
Local members of the University and College Union (UCU) Scotland are currently in the final week of a three-week strike protesting against the proposed job cuts.
Local Scottish Labour MSP Michael Marra described the job cuts as “devastating” for the university staff and the city of Dundee, noting that this could be one of the largest redundancies in the history of Scottish higher education. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating that the university must address the underlying issues that led to this financial crisis and that it is ultimately the staff who are suffering the consequences.
