THUNDER BAY — The debate over the impact of program suspensions at Confederation College heats up as OPSEU and the college present conflicting data on job losses.
Conflicting Reports on Job Losses
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) warns of more program suspensions ahead, raising concerns among faculty about job security. Rebecca Ward, president of OPSEU local 732, shares the anxiety: "Every few months what's being predicted at Confederation shifts and changes."
In March, the college announced the indefinite suspension of 11 programs, with three more pausing enrolment in May. However, the exact impact on staffing remains unclear due to differing data from both sides.
College's Stance Confederation College claims no full-time faculty positions have been cut due to the suspensions, with only one part-time support and two administrative roles eliminated. They report a total reduction of 41 positions through various measures, including a hiring pause and voluntary retirements.
OPSEU's Counterclaim Contrastingly, Ward reveals a loss of approximately 100 part-time and contract faculty positions, 11 full-time faculty jobs, and warns of five more at risk. She emphasizes the union's efforts to protect jobs, citing 10 grievances filed in the past 10 months.
Broader Implications The situation at Confederation reflects wider challenges in Ontario's college system, with OPSEU reporting 10,000 faculty and staff affected by program changes province-wide, calling it one of the largest mass layoffs in Ontario's history.
Declining international student enrolment adds to the pressure, with numbers halving from expectations, further straining college resources.
