Canada's Tech Job Market: A Dramatic Shift
A new study reveals that Canada's tech job market has experienced a significant downturn over the past five years, transitioning from a period of rapid growth to a notable decline.
According to research from Indeed, job openings in the tech sector posted on their platform in August were down 19 per cent compared to early 2020 levels. This drop is attributed to factors such as market adjustments following a pandemic-induced hiring boom and recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) that may be reducing the need for workforce expansion in tech firms.
It's challenging to pinpoint the exact cause, as tech job postings were already declining before the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, which sparked increased interest in AI. Interestingly, while roles like software engineers have seen the most significant decreases, hiring for AI-related jobs has actually increased compared to early 2020.
When compared globally, Canada's overall decline in tech job postings is somewhat less severe than in countries like the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany, indicating a relatively more resilient market.
