Summary:

  • B.C. ends the healthcare ambassador program, impacting 217 workers.

  • $163 million is being redirected to support other areas of the healthcare system.

  • Health Minister commits $5 million for vocational training and job opportunities.

  • Union members could qualify for up to $8,000 in training funds.

Overview

A program that began during COVID-19 to help patients navigate healthcare facilities is coming to an end. However, affected workers will have opportunities to remain in the healthcare field.

The Program's Impact

Five years ago, volunteers greeted individuals entering hospitals, guiding them through the system. The province transitioned these volunteers into paid healthcare ambassadors, essential for patient support during the pandemic.

“They were an important part of the healthcare team,” said Caelie Frampton, spokesperson for the Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU).

Unfortunately, the program is set to end, creating a gap in a healthcare system already under strain. Frampton expressed that the ambassadors played a crucial role in providing comfort during difficult times, and many are disappointed about losing their jobs.

Affected Workers

Island Health has 217 ambassadors directly impacted by this change, with about 1,000 HEU members affected overall.

Future Opportunities

Health Minister Josie Osborne stated that with the pandemic over, the province is reallocating $163 million to different areas within the healthcare system, while committing $5 million for vocational training and job opportunities for displaced workers.

“These are still very valuable members of the healthcare community,” Osborne mentioned, assuring that new jobs and training opportunities would be available.

Transitioning Responsibilities

As the ambassador program concludes, clerks will take over the responsibilities previously held by ambassadors. Although hospital wait times are high, the HEU emphasizes the need for more workers in the system, advocating for retraining programs for those affected.

Financial Support for Workers

Details are being finalized for union members who could qualify for up to $8,000 each in training funds as the program ends on April 30.
