The Future of Work in the Age of AI
By 2030, an estimated 92 million jobs will be displaced by AI, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025. However, this displacement won't affect everyone equally. Black, Latino, and low-wage workers are at a higher risk due to their overrepresentation in roles more likely to be automated.
Jobs at Risk vs. Jobs on the Rise
While cashiers, administrative assistants, and caretakers are among the most vulnerable, the same report predicts the creation of 170 million new jobs, particularly in farming, delivery, construction, and sales. The disparity highlights the need for equitable access to emerging opportunities.
The Diversity Gap in Tech
Black and Latino workers are underrepresented in fast-growing tech roles, a gap attributed to limited exposure to STEM, lack of mentorship, and systemic biases. This lack of diversity can lead to algorithmic bias, affecting tools like facial recognition software, which has shown higher error rates for darker skin tones.
Strategies for Equity
Employers must prioritize diversity and inclusion to mitigate AI's disproportionate impact. Initiatives like apprenticeships, community partnerships, and targeted job fairs can help bridge the gap. Ensuring equity in AI development is not just ethical but essential for sustainable growth.
