A new report from Microsoft researchers reveals the occupations most exposed to generative AI, and the list includes some surprising roles like teachers and historians. While AI won't necessarily replace these jobs, it will reshape how work is done. Here's what you need to know.
The Jobs Most at Risk from AI
The study analyzed 200,000 real-world conversations of Copilot users and cross-compared AI performance with occupational data. The top 40 most affected occupations include:
- Interpreters and Translators
- Historians
- Writers and Authors
- Customer Service Representatives
- Sales Representatives
- Journalists
- Teachers (postsecondary)
- Data Scientists
- Web Developers
- Management Analysts
These roles involve knowledge work—tasks like research, writing, and communication that AI can increasingly handle.
A Degree Won't Protect You
Interestingly, many of the jobs with high AI exposure require a Bachelor's degree. The researchers found that occupations requiring a degree have higher AI applicability than those with lower education requirements. This challenges the traditional belief that a degree guarantees job security.
Jobs Safe from AI
On the flip side, hands-on roles are least affected. The top 10 least affected occupations include:
- Dredge Operators
- Bridge and Lock Tenders
- Water Treatment Plant Operators
- Orderlies
- Logging Equipment Operators
These jobs involve physical tasks that AI cannot easily automate.
The Future of Work
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang famously said, "You're not going to lose your job to an AI, but you're going to lose your job to someone who uses AI." The key is to embrace AI and learn how to leverage it in your role.
The healthcare sector is a bright spot, with growing demand for home health and personal care aides. Even so, the researchers caution that their study only covers generative AI; other forms of AI could impact jobs like truck driving.
What This Means for Gen Z
Many Gen Zers have turned to education as a stable career, but the report shows that some teaching roles have high AI applicability. While schools won't replace teachers with AI overnight, the technology could reshape the profession.
Bottom line: AI is transforming the job market. Stay informed, upskill, and adapt to remain competitive.
