153 Jobs Lost: ArcelorMittal Shuts Down Hamilton Wire Drawing Mill
ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada has announced the closure of its Hamilton wire drawing mill, resulting in 153 job losses. The operations will be relocated to the company's Montreal mill, a move that has sparked concerns among the affected workforce.
Impact on Employees
The decision to close the Hamilton facility was not taken lightly. Stephane Brochu, CEO of AMLPC, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the affected employees during this transition. "It is never an easy decision to close a site. First and foremost, all our efforts are focused on supporting the employees affected by this closure," Brochu stated.
Industry Pressures
Steel producers, including ArcelorMittal, have been under significant pressure due to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. These tariffs, initially set at 25%, were later doubled to 50%, exacerbating challenges for the industry.
Company Overview
ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada employs over 2,000 people across multiple sites in Quebec. The company produces more than two million tonnes of steel annually, used in various applications such as construction rebar and truck leaf springs.
Additional Operations
In addition to the Montreal mill, ArcelorMittal also operates the Dofasco steelmaking facility in Hamilton, which remains unaffected by this closure.
