10,000 New High-Tech Jobs Could Be Coming to Canada Thanks to Swedish Fighter Jet Deal

Potential Job Boom in Canadian Aerospace

Swedish aerospace giant SAAB has announced that up to 10,000 new manufacturing and research jobs could be created in Canada if the federal government decides to include the Gripen fighter jet in its military fleet. This development comes as part of broader discussions between SAAB and Ottawa about establishing production capabilities on Canadian soil.

Key Partnerships and Opportunities

SAAB President and CEO Micael Johansson confirmed in an interview at the company’s Stockholm headquarters that talks are underway with Canadian officials. He highlighted potential collaborations with major Canadian firms, including:

  • Bombardier (headquartered in Montreal)
  • CAE (also based in Montreal)
  • IMP Aerospace and Defence (from Nova Scotia)

Johansson emphasized SAAB’s readiness to support sovereign capabilities in Canada, stating, “We could do a technology transfer to Canada and support that build-up.” This could involve final assembly, testing, and upgrades performed locally.

Production Plans and Timeline

The project might include forming a joint venture with partners like Bombardier or expanding existing collaborations. Options range from building new facilities to converting existing ones, with the first Canadian-made Gripen potentially rolling out within three to five years.

Broader Implications for Canada and Allies

Johansson noted that the aircraft would not only serve the Canadian Armed Forces but could also support allies like Ukraine, which has expressed interest in acquiring 100 Gripen jets. He explained, “If we’re going to ramp up production to support a big contract to Ukraine, we will need one or two extra hubs. It makes sense to have a big footprint in Canada.”

This partnership is seen as a win-win, leveraging Canada’s resources and shared concerns about Arctic sovereignty, while addressing Sweden’s limited production capacity.

Current Canadian Fighter Jet Procurement

Canada has already committed to purchasing 16 F-35 stealth fighters from American manufacturer Lockheed Martin, with an option to increase the fleet to 88. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of this purchase, leaving open the possibility of a dual fleet that includes Gripens.

Upcoming High-Level Visit

A significant political and economic delegation from Sweden, led by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, is scheduled to visit Canada next week. Stops in Ottawa and Montreal aim to strengthen military alliances, with Johansson participating and a visit to Bombardier on the agenda. However, no imminent announcement is expected, as Johansson clarified, “It’s up to Canada. We are not campaigning; we are providing information for Ottawa to make the decision.”
