Job Description:
About Us:
ZenaTech is a Nasdaq-listed technology company focused on AI drone, Drone as a Service (DaaS), enterprise SaaS and Quantum Computing solutions for mission-critical applications for business, government and defense. Through both our ZenaDrone and Drone as a Service subsidiaries, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of drone innovation across sectors and applications such as for surveying, inspections, maintenance, agriculture, and defense applications.
The Industrial Designer is responsible for researching, conceptualizing, and developing the form, function, and performance of products and mechanical systems. This role emphasizes engineering-driven product design, including structural integrity, lightweight construction, manufacturability, and integration of mechanical components.
The position focuses on translating product requirements into robust, production-ready designs while ensuring compliance with applicable Ontario and Canadian laws, regulations, and standards, as well as relevant municipal requirements within the City of Toronto.
Industrial Designers are not regulated under the Professional Engineers Act; however, they must ensure their work does not constitute the practice of professional engineering unless appropriately licensed and supervised.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop product concepts and detailed designs with a focus on mechanical performance, durability, and lightweight construction.
- Design and model mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures using CAD tools for production and integration.
- Create 3D models, technical drawings, and specifications suitable for manufacturing and fabrication.
- Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet structural, thermal, and functional requirements.
- Evaluate materials and manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC machining, injection molding, composites, additive manufacturing) for strength, weight, cost, and scalability.
- Support the design and integration of complex systems such as payloads, enclosures, mounting systems, or electromechanical assemblies.
- Conduct design validation through prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement.
- Optimize designs for weight reduction, structural efficiency, and environmental performance.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable safety, durability, and product regulations.
- Maintain design documentation, revision control, and configuration management throughout the product lifecycle.
- Participate in cross-functional design reviews and technical decision-making.
Regulatory & Legal Compliance
The Industrial Designer must comply with, but is not limited to, the following:
- Ontario Human Rights Code (where applicable)
- Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), where relevant
- Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (where applicable)
- Intellectual Property laws (copyrights, industrial designs, trademarks)
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) (Ontario)
- Environmental regulations applicable to materials and product lifecycle
- Toronto Municipal Codes and bylaws, where applicable
Industrial Designers must avoid representing themselves as professional engineers unless licensed under the Professional Engineers Act (Ontario).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design or a related discipline (mechanical design, product design, or engineering-related programs considered).
- Strong portfolio demonstrating mechanical design capability, including assemblies, functional products, or hardware systems.
- Proficiency in CAD and modeling tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of materials, structural design, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience designing for real-world constraints such as weight, strength, tolerances, and environmental conditions.
- Ability to produce production-ready documentation and collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Assets
- Experience designing lightweight structures, enclosures, or mechanical assemblies.
- Experience working on drone systems, robotics, aerospace components, or similar hardware products.
- Familiarity with composites, aluminum structures, or weight-optimized designs.
- Experience with prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC, fabrication).
- Exposure to simulation or analysis tools (FEA, basic structural validation).
- Experience collaborating closely with engineering and production teams.
- Familiarity with sustainability or lifecycle considerations in product design.
