Nestled in northwest British Columbia alongside the Bulkley River, Witset thrives as a community of approximately 2,100 members. Originally Witsuwit’en fishing grounds, Witset has evolved into a flourishing village with 661 on-reserve and 1,129 off-reserve members.

Situated between Smithers and New Hazelton, Witset embraces its rich culture and history, echoing through the valley, a land loved for generations. As a federally recognized Indian band, Witset First Nation is dedicated to providing tailored programs and services for its diverse community.

Witset First Nation is looking for a full-time Economic Development Officer based in Witset, BC (25 minutes north of Smithers, BC).

Reporting to the Executive Director, this role is responsible for advancing the Nation’s economic development strategy by managing projects, overseeing departmental operations, and identifying sustainable opportunities to support community prosperity.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing economic development strategies, policies, and departmental work plans
  • Leading business attraction, job creation, and entrepreneurial initiatives tailored to community needs
  • Coordinating and managing funding proposals, agreements, and reporting requirements
  • Overseeing economic and resource development projects from initiation to completion
  • Supporting community members with business planning, employment pathways, and training opportunities
  • Building strategic partnerships that align with the Nation’s values and long-term vision
  • Representing Witset First Nation at meetings, conferences, and stakeholder events
  • Monitoring departmental budgets, financial reporting, and resource allocation
  • Leading departmental HR functions including recruitment, coaching, and performance reviews
  • Preparing regular progress updates for the Executive Director and Chief and Council
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, funding guidelines, and internal policies
  • Promoting sustainable land use and integrating environmental stewardship into development initiatives

About You

To qualify, you will need a degree in Economic Development, Business Administration, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Science, Lands and Natural Resources, Project Management, or a related field. A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive management experience in economic development, ideally within an Indigenous or community planning context, will also be essential. A master’s degree is considered an asset.

The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:

  • Experience in project management, business planning, and funding proposal development
  • Strong understanding of First Nations governance, legislation, and administrative procedures
  • Financial acumen with experience in budget development, oversight, and operational planning
  • Familiarity with environmental stewardship and sustainable land use practices
  • Knowledge of Indigenous funding models and reporting requirements

As our ideal candidate, you possess strong leadership and communication skills, cultural sensitivity, a collaborative spirit, and the ability to build lasting relationships with community members, staff, and external partners. This is a strategic and community-centered leadership role for someone who is passionate about driving sustainable economic growth, empowering Indigenous communities, and turning long-term vision into actionable outcomes.

Lastly, we are looking for a candidate who is looking for stability and a place to settle and build a life in the natural, raw, and sacred untouched land of the Witset First Nation.

Note: Preference will be given to applicants who have First Nations ancestry.

The successful candidate must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have access to a reliable vehicle. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory criminal records check, including a vulnerable sector screening. Candidates must also be willing to undergo random drug testing as required.
