Position Overview The Human Resources Business Partner for the Human Rights Office plays an essential role in supporting Unity Health Toronto’s mission by promoting a healthy, engaged, and productive workforce. Reporting to the Manager of Human Rights and Programs, this position collaborates with leaders, staff, and stakeholders to support with complex workplace issues, including attendance management, human rights matters, workplace accommodations, and investigations. The role supports staff well-being by maintaining fair workplace practices and ensuring compliance with relevant laws, including the Human Rights Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Employment Standards Act. The incumbent will offer expert advice to leaders on attendance management and human rights issues to foster a respectful workplace culture. The Ideal Candidate
- The ideal candidate brings strong experience in employee relations, workplace investigations, and attendance management, with the ability to navigate sensitive matters in the workplace with discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment. Possessing a strong understanding of human rights legislation and are comfortable advising leaders on complex workplace matters.
- Lead and oversee the Well and Working attendance program, managing multiple attendance streams (recognition, awareness and traditional attendance program,) prepare attendance letters and emails, coaching managers on attendance conversations and responding to staff enquiries along with collaborating with internal stake holders to maintain dashboard, report on metrics to support positive attendance behaviours.
- Provide expert advice to leaders on workplace accommodations, human rights issues, and respectful workplace practices.
- Provide support for the intake and assessment of human rights concerns, determining appropriate pathways including investigation, mediation or advisory support.
- Support workplace investigations related to human rights complaints, harassment, and discrimination.
- When needed, offer guidance to leaders on human rights laws, workplace accommodations, and other related issues as needed.
- As projects come up, support the development of other projects and programs assigned to the Human Rights Office
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree combined with a diploma or certificate in Human Resources Management. CHRP designation or active candidacy strongly preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of progressive Human Resources experience providing independent employee and/or labour relations advice to staff and leaders, including guidance on workplace issues, performance management, attendance management, and progressive discipline.
- Demonstrated experience consulting on human rights matters, including accommodation processes, applying the legal framework of the Human Rights Code, and supporting managers in meeting their duty to accommodate.
- Experience conducting workplace investigations, gathering and analyzing evidence, interviewing parties and witnesses, and preparing clear, well-documented, and defensible investigation reports and recommendations.
- Proven ability to coach and advise leaders on attendance and human rights issues, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and best practices in people management.
- Experience supporting attendance management programs, including reviewing patterns, advising leaders on appropriate interventions, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable legislation.
- Experience in healthcare or a similarly complex unionized public sector environment is strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of employment legislation including the Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Advanced knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, including human rights law, precedent and conducting code-based harassment and discrimination investigations.
- Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate documentation and produce clear, concise written reports and recommendations.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with leaders, employees, unions, and stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to provide HR advisory services and practical, solution-oriented guidance.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation, communication, and time management skills.
- Self-directed learner committed to continuous professional development.
- Satisfactory attendance record.
