This Opportunity

The Calgary office of Smith + Andersen is currently seeking a Staff Accountant. The successful candidate will support expense processing and vendor invoice management. The staff accountant helps in maintaining accurate records and contributing to month-end and year-end close activities.

  • Review, analyze and approve employee expense reports by verifying against back-up provided ensuring compliance with company policy. Liaise with employees regarding discrepancies.
  • Process direct deposit payment for employees and print employee expense cheques using Deltek/Vision. Liaise with reception to ensure employee expense cheques are distributed accordingly.
  • Prepare accounts payable invoices for payment including matching, coding and recording entries weekly.
  • Verify that all documents printed on the in-house plotter are project related. Prepare plotting summary and record entries in the system on a monthly basis.
  • Process invoices for payment including matching, coding and recording of entries as needed.
  • Cut cheques for payable and sub-consultant invoices on a weekly basis.
  • Provide banking information to the clients across all offices and set up Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) as needed.
  • Maintain accounting ledgers by verifying, adjusting and posting account transactions, as requested, as well as part of year-end closing.
  • Assist as required with the month-end close process to ensure the accurate, timely and proper recording of employee expenses is reported.
  • Assist the Controller during the year-end audit; provide back-up documentation, as required.

Who You Are

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting and/or Finance or Business Administration.
  • One to two years of experience working in an accounting role.
  • Experience with accounting programs such as Deltek Vantagepoint considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of all Microsoft Office Suites, specifically Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Able to communicate with both internal and external clients.
  • Superior organization and administrative skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of data, demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish productive relationships with people at all levels.
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
