Job DescriptionRESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. Position Summary Department / Research Program: Liquid biopsies, cancer genomic analyses and biobanking - Child Health and Human Development (CHHD) We are seeking a highly motivated, organized and detail-oriented individual with excellent communication skills to join the Liquid Biopsy and cancer genomic clinical-research collaboration between established clinicians and researchers at the MUHC: Nada Jabado, Janusz Rak, Livia Garzia, Joanna Przybyl and Catherine Goudie. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of Drs Jabado and Goudie as well as their respective oncology clinical/research program managers.

  • The individual's primary tasks will focus on implementing the collection and coordination of liquid biopsies across key patient populations including: newly diagnosed/refractory/relapsed solid tumors in children, adult patients with specific cancer types (sarcomas, brain tumors), children and adults who are predisposed to developing cancers. Serial liquid biopsies will also be performed in specified patient populations.

Liquid biopsies can be used to access tumor cells and tumor DNA/markers circulating in the blood. Longitudinal implementation and monitoring of liquid biopsies can provide a minimally invasive and repeatable means to detect, analyze and monitor cancer, or gain information about its response to treatment

  • The incumbent will also collaborate with research teams to collect and organize relevant datapoints and additional tumor samples within the REB approved ORCYD Biobank.

The Biobank and its researchers have a mission to collect, store and analyze biological samples and associated clinical and research data from participants at the MUHC who have provided informed consent.

  • The incumbent will also contribute to the coordination of samples for paired genomic analyses (normal cells and tumor cells) in eligible patients (in addition to liquid biopsy samples).

The incumbent will play a key role in the collaboration and operation of the described initiatives and platforms within the pediatric population at the Montreal Children’s Hospital as well as particular populations at the Royal Victoria Hospital. In a progressive manner, and according to ethics approvals and data/material sharing contracts, patients from external sites may be eligible to participate in the Liquid Biopsy initiative and related genomic sample collections and analyses. General Duties

  • Act as a primary point of contact for sample collection for eligible patients with new/relapse pediatric cancer diagnoses (as well as specific eligible adult populations) ,
  • Become subject matter expert on biologic samples (collection technicalities, prioritization of samples) for pediatric cancer types ,
  • Retrieval of biologic samples as required from source locations such as clinics, ward, operating room, interventional radiology, pathology departments as well as research platforms. Deliver samples in a timely manner to research laboratories ,
  • Collaboration with the entire multidisciplinary team ,
  • Documentation of sample collections, deliveries, utilities, etc.
  • Coordination of samples from external participants (eligible for biobanking and research initiatives) ,
  • Monitoring patient visits and ensuring liquid biopsy samples are obtained longitudinally within their cancer journey ,
  • Consenting patients into the research ORCYD biobank as needed as per GCP/ Division 5 Guidelines ,
  • Retrieve clinical information from medical charts and electronic records and enter specific information into the ORCYD biobank and cancer predisposition data systems ,
  • Coordinate and maintain documentation regarding sample retrieval from ORCYD biobank for REB approved studies ,
  • Maintain Participant Enrolment logs ,
  • Regulatory tasks including but not limited to, managing biobank renewals, amendments ,
  • Weekly communications to ORCYD team (clinical and research) and pathology summarizing samples picked up, consent status, pending surgeries, etc ,
  • Participation in departmental Rounds/ Tumor boards/ Molecular Tumor Boards ,
  • Obtaining and Maintaining appropriate certifications,
  • Accomplishes any other related tasks as required by the immediate supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of oral and written French is required.
  • An advanced knowledge of oral and written English is required, as the position requires regular and complex contact with researchers or international students who are exclusively proficient in English.
  • Knowledge of basic Medical Nomenclature a prerequisite to succeed in this position,
  • Must have genuine interest in Hematology/ Oncology, Cancer Genetics and Pediatrics,
  • Attention to detail and accuracy ,
  • Self-directed with an ability to organize, plan, prioritize and multi-task with varying degrees of supervision,
  • Communication and collaboration skills,
