We grow trust and relationships by meeting with people where they live and telling stories rooted in those communities. This requires coordinated efforts across teams to make people and community part of the daily practice of the journalism we do at CBC in Quebec. This producer position plays a key leadership role in this work. As the Coordinating Producer of Community and Development, you will work with news, current affairs and communications teams across Quebec to deepen our community connections and broaden the representation and diversity of perspectives in our reporting and programming. You will actively organize ways of listening to the people we don’t currently reach in underserved communities and you will help CBC engage with them. This includes our priority, underserved audiences of 30-49 year olds, in particular, newcomers, the South Asian, Black, Filipino, Chinese, Arab, First Nation and Inuit communities, and non-users of CBC. You will work with the new reporters in CBC local service expansion bureaus in Quebec, programmers and the assignment team to increase stories and voices from regions we have expanded into, and support strategies to help local audiences discover our content. You will help create space for conversations and exchange. You will work with editorial and communication teams to identify story ideas and original content that flows from community input. You will suggest and organize outreach and in person community conversations that deepen our journalism. Working under the supervision of the Managing Editor and Executive Producer of News and Current Affairs, you will also play an important role in developing staff by coordinating onboarding and skills-development plans to ensure our people are supported in their work. The position calls for a storyteller with a curiosity about people, who is comfortable working with technology to produce audio, visual and text-based content. While the producer does not lead a dedicated team, they collaborate with editorial leaders to design the team they need for different projects and support our community strategy in daily news coverage. The producer must be comfortable working autonomously, building relationships and planning projects. They know how to engage others, how to set goals and use data to measure success. Creativity is a must, as is a commitment to learning from and with others. The Coordinating Producer of Community and Development will work under the supervision of the Executive Producer of News and Current Affairs. This position is based in Montreal.Your Community Engagement Responsibilities Will Include

  • Elevating community voices in our daily journalism. You will attend daily meetings with news and current affairs teams to bring forth ideas to increase representation and diversity of perspectives. You will research, grow and share contacts in our key underserved priority communities.
  • Coordinating station initiatives that improve connections with communities we are seeking to grow in line with CBC News objectives, in partnership with editorial and communications teams.
  • Developing and providing editorial support for new local expansion bureaus in partnership with the assignment desk. You will identify and liaise on outreach initiatives rooted in our journalism.
  • Aligning efforts around our audience growth strategy, gathering data about the communities and tracking the work being done.
  • Produce multi-platform content including assigning, commissioning, researching, gathering, writing, vetting and production.
  • Ensure content is distributed across digital platforms, regional lineups and new spaces for audience discovery.
  • Planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing the components and/or segments of a content series, community project or pop-up bureau.
  • Tracking the costs associated with community initiatives and keeping them within budget.
  • Adhering to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and Code of Conduct.
  • Managing multiple projects on different timelines.
  • Communicating and collaborating effectively across multiple departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your Development Responsibilities Will Include

  • Organizing training and onboarding resources for employees to support their ongoing development.
  • Consulting with teams on training opportunities and supporting team leaders to ensure plans are communicated, scheduled and well-organized.
  • Mentor and provide feedback to producers, researchers and journalists to encourage their growth.
  • Creating and updating onboarding and training documents.

QualificationsWe are looking for a candidate with the following skills and qualities:

  • A university degree or equivalent and lived experience.
  • Minimum 3-years experience working in journalism, with a proficiency in audio, digital and video storytelling, vetting and production.
  • Fluency in English and a strong command of French
  • Experience connecting with external stakeholders and community organizations.
  • Project planning skills and experience managing budgets.
  • Independent, self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Familiar with the programming and strategic priorities of CBC News.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. Able to establish trust and maintain strong relationships.
  • Experience producing content in collaboration with underserved communities
  • Commitment to including equity-seeking groups in our storytelling.
  • Demonstrates the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading teams in news and/or current affairs.
  • Coaching, training and mentorship experience.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital audience trends, and what builds engagement among different demographics on different media including social media. Experience with data analytics.
