The Role The phlebotomy department provides a venepuncture service on behalf of all services within the Acute Division of Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The phlebotomy service is part of the South Sector. You will be responsible for the delivery of the phlebotomy service to wards within the Acute Division, thus ensuring target times are met and adhered to for the delivery of blood specimens to the laboratories. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
  • Part-time position (9 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are between 7am to 11:30am mainly Saturday and Sunday but can be asked to cover public holidays and alternate days on a 2/7 rota basis.
  • Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Train new members of staff.
  • Provide assistance to the Head Phlebotomist on a daily basis, liaising with and other senior phlebotomists and phlebotomists regularly throughout the working day and clinical staff at ward level.
  • Completion of individual staff daily timesheets, ensuring accuracy for data transfer to SSTS (payroll system).
  • Coordinate and prepare ward and clinic rotas to ensure provision of a consistent seven day per week phlebotomy service is delivered.
  • Organise own time and that of staff within remit
  • To ensure that “Patient Confidentiality” in line with written protocols, is maintained at all times.
  • Collect blood samples from appropriate patients by venepuncture or capillary sample, on request from medical staff
  • To ensure accuracy in cross-matching of blood transfusion samples and protocols are adhered in the authorisation process after taking blood sample from patient
  • To ensure correct identification and labelling of these samples and accompanying documentation

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • The post holder will be educated to standard grade level or have equivalent level of experience in Health Care or Medical Sciences.
  • A minimum of two years phlebotomy experience
  • The post holder will possess excellent communication, team-working and time management skills and have the ability to motivate others and work using own initiative.
