The Role This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to lead MRI Imaging Services. The QEUH is the largest acute hospital in Scotland and the designated Major Trauma Centre for the West of Scotland within the Major Trauma Network and the designated site for stroke thrombectomy, supporting services with 2 1.5T wide bore Siemens Aera MRI scanners, undertaking a large variety of complex acute imaging such as; cardiac, major trauma, vascular, oncology and orthopaedics. Within the QEUH campus the Institute of Neurological Sciences hosts Siemens Vida 3T and Siemens Sola 1.5T undertaking all specialist imaging be it emergency, or planned for stoke, neurosurgery, neurology and spinal specialities. The successful candidate will work closely with the local management and clinical teams to develop and deliver a high-quality patient-focused service. Education and training are key elements of the department, and the successful candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills to help deliver these. You will be key to leading the development and implementation of clinical and professional standards, whilst being passionate about delivering exceptional patient care. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Permanent, Full time
- Shift Pattern - Various over 24/7, 365 days
- Base location – Queen Elizabeth University Hospital/Institute of Neurological Sciences
Key Responsibilities You will provide expert professional leadership and advice to staff, management and service users, setting and implementing clear clinical objectives within the service. The role requires promoting effective teamwork, collaboration and continuous improvement in ways of working, alongside identifying training needs, maintaining training records and providing constructive feedback to staff. You will be expected to escalate unresolved issues appropriately, clarify team roles and responsibilities, and ensure safe working practices, particularly within environments involving radiation and strong magnetic fields. In the clinical aspect of the role, you will manage a range of specialist imaging tasks on a daily basis while responding to frequent requests for advice. You will demonstrate a high level of clinical autonomy, adjusting imaging protocols, adapting techniques for complex patients and tailoring communication to individual needs. Acting as a recognised expert, you will advise both clinical and non-clinical colleagues on imaging pathways and equipment capabilities, ensuring consistently high-quality imaging and resolving technical issues where required. You will justify, authorise and perform complex imaging procedures in line with relevant protocols, MHRA guidance and local policies, and promptly communicate any urgent findings to clinicians. The role also involves coordinating imaging for complex cases across local and regional services, providing specialist advice to patients, and working closely with MR Safety experts to maintain accurate risk assessments. You will support the training, supervision and assessment of student radiographers, maintaining accountability for their practice. From a managerial perspective, you will be responsible for the effective deployment of staff to ensure safe and adequate 24-hour service provision, including the day-to-day reorganisation of staffing to respond to absences or increased demand. You will design and implement rotas where required, coordinate inpatient and outpatient activity through close liaison with clinical, portering and administrative teams, and make decisions in complex or unpredictable situations such as equipment failure or emergency referrals. The postholder will maintain accurate patient records in line with professional standards and lead or support radiographers in audit, quality assurance and clinical governance activities. You will supervise radiographic staff, ensure the safe use of imaging equipment and provide ongoing clinical training. You will act as line manager for the modality team, including Band 6, Band 5 and Healthcare Support Workers, and will chair staff meetings and huddles as required. The role includes contributing to the development and maintenance of departmental policies, procedures, standards, protocols and Local Rules, as well as coordinating equipment maintenance, reporting faults and ensuring compliance with safety and documentation requirements, including Q Pulse. You will support the procurement of new equipment and systems, monitor and order supplies and consumables, and contribute to delivering a high-quality service within budget. Attendance at multidisciplinary and management meetings will be expected, and you will deputise for the Site Lead when required. In addition, you may undertake designated managerial responsibilities such as SSTS, PECOS, sickness absence management including return to work interviews, rota management and leave management, in line with service needs. Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- HCPC registration.
- D.C.R. or BSc (Hons.) in Diagnostic Radiography.
- Evidence of CPD and post- graduate study in a specialist area.
- Current and wide range of highly developed specialist technical and Healthcare knowledge.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Be able to organise and motivate others to deliver plans.
- Ability to take responsibility and make decisions in accordance with this post.
- Team worker with developed and appropriate leadership style.
- Evidence of a high level of analytical problem solving skills.
- Interpersonal skills to negotiate influence and inspire.
- Effective advocate for patients and staff in a wide range of arenas.
- Computer literate and able to use data bases
- Have a positive attitude to flexible working to meet the demands of the service
- IV Injection certificate if relevant to role
