The Role We are looking for a Mechanical Technologist to perform operations and maintenance in the facilities of the Aerospace Research Centre. The Mechanical Technologist would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity. The successful candidate will play an important role within a team of Mechanical Technologists serving the Aerodynamics Laboratory (AL). The work will be conducted at the Uplands Campus facilities. Responsibilities will include carrying out compressor and cooling tower operations, facility equipment maintenance, and test preparations. The successful candidate will be expected to operate a large compressor (11,250 HP ten-stage radial flow) and associated drying and cooling systems. You will safely perform preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of large mechanical equipment such as hydraulic pumps, heat exchangers, water treatment systems, valves, etc. You will also be required to perform mechanical test preparation duties for the AL’s 1.5 m and 9 m wind tunnels. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively perform troubleshooting of main and auxiliary equipment, conduct routine repairs, and properly communicate and report operational and maintenance issues. This position will be of interest to someone who enjoys learning about and operating machinery; has the ability to learn and desire to be taught the fundamentals of science and mechanics related to the equipment; and works well as part of a world-class team to deliver quality service. Screening Criteria Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates: Education Certificate or diploma from a post-secondary school in a Mechanical Trade or Mechanical Technician / Technologist program.   • Significant experience with operation of large rotating machinery and controls;
  • Significant experience in mechanical maintenance of equipment such as large compressors, pumps, valves, air piping systems, pressure vessels, etc.;
  • Significant experience recording maintenance and operational data through computerized systems (CMMS), Word, and Excel programs; and
  • Significant experience in safe operation of hand and power tools and material handling equipment.

Assets:

  • Experience working with large compressors and associated equipment;
  • Experience working with large cooling towers;
  • Experience with overhead crane and forklift operation;
  • Experience working at heights and the use of the related equipment;
  • Experience with machine and wood shop tools.

Condition of Employment Secret (II) A thorough security clearance process will be applied. For a Secret Clearance, verification of background information over a period of 10 years is required. Individuals must have lived in Canada for a sufficient period of time to enable the security screening process.

  • Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects;
  • Must be able to work with the presence of enhanced noise levels;
  • Must be able to work in high and low temperatures; and
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.

  • Knowledge of rotating machinery operation.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and repair procedures as applicable to machinery.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical systems, including fastening and assembly procedures of pumps, gearboxes, valves, etc.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following skills: welding, pipe fitting, millwrighting.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, and process diagrams.
  • Knowledge of safety practices relating to material handling and elevated work platform equipment.
  • Ability to write reports, and draft protocols and standard operating procedures.
