About You HDR is currently seeking a Power Market Sector Lead, Canada who has interest in expanding their career across multiple practices, business areas, and technical innovations across Canada. This position is a key role for our power market sector growth, responsible for staff and program management and building local teams across the country to provide project management and technical expertise, and to support business development activities for a diverse set of power generation, power delivery, hydropower, renewables, technology, data centre, and industrial projects and clients across the country. HDR is recognized by Engineering News Record in the Top 20 ranking for Power. With over 1,000 professionals working within the power market sector, we are leading, transmission and distribution design, power generation design, hydropower design, siting and routing, and environmental due diligence and monitoring throughout BC, AB, SK, ON, NL, and NB. The Power Market Sector Leader will bring power generation, power delivery, hydropower, or comparable technical experience, with a seller/doer mindset to grow these services with power utilities, cooperatives, energy developers, industrial and technology companies. The primary duties of the Power Market Sector Leader include leadership and responsibility for program growth with an emphasis on client development, market diversification, and recruiting and developing talent to support project and program needs. This position will work closely with local, regional, and national leaders to influence the general direction of the Canadian Power program to ensure that the operations and growth expectations are met. The successful candidate will be involved in program management, project management, delivery design, quality management, client relationships, identification of opportunities, and will work closely with multi-disciplinary project teams to develop effective, creative, high-quality power design solutions for power generation, power delivery, hydropower, renewables, technology, data centre, and industrial clients in Canada. The candidate will also work collaboratively with the US and UK power teams, teaming partners, and other business groups within HDR to provide solutions that meet regional regulatory requirements and to deliver world class services to our clients with complex power delivery needs. The primary duties of this position include leadership, building and managing multiple teams, and designing, planning, managing, permitting, and delivering all aspects of power generation (thermal and reciprocating), power delivery (high voltage electrical switching stations, substations, distribution and transmission), hydropower, and renewable energy projects, as well as business continuity, and resiliency components. Specific duties include:

  • Program management for power generation, power delivery, hydropower, and renewable energy clients, including providing power related support for technology, data centre, and industrial clients (mining, oil & gas, food & beverage, advanced manufacturing, and agribusiness), including participation in business planning, client development, resource management, and quality management.
  • Possess and maintain a deep understanding of how clients perceive their technical problems and have the ability to package HDR expertise as solutions to these problems. In turn, supporting marketing (business development) leadership in crafting client capture plan strategies.
  • Act as Senior Project Manager or Senior Engineer for power related projects (seller-doer).
  • Builds and supervises one or more team(s) located across Canada, of engineers and designers and provides oversight of workload, quality, utilization, training, and performing annual performance reviews of team members.
  • Collaborates with marketing and client leaders to build on existing client relationships with power generation, power delivery, hydropower, renewable, technology, data centre, and industrial clients, with an initial focus on power delivery (substations, distribution, transmission interconnect, renewable energy, business continuity, and resiliency) and power generation (thermal, reciprocating, and hydropower).
  • Utilizes knowledge of and experience with utility frameworks, design standards, utility interconnect processes, and preferred project delivery models across the globe to develop and scope new project opportunities.
  • Utilizes experience with power delivery procurement and construction industry good practices in Canada, with traditional and alternative procurement delivery models, to bring innovative solutions to scoping and executing projects.
  • Collaborates with HDR operations leaders, project managers, and project teams to leverage staff for engineering execution to deliver world class quality in design and construction support of international projects.
  • Supports HDR Business Groups to deliver complex power delivery solutions for clients.
  • Develops relationships and agreements with regional teaming partners, as required, to support regulatory approvals and/or licensure requirements of projects.
  • Manages projects, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, quality reviews, project closeout, and quality control, schedule, and budget management.
  • Leads risk management activities for both contract reviews and project deliverables.
  • Directs the technical messaging and professional attendance at professional organizations and industry events.
  • Works with practice leads to establish direction and growth strategies for the Market Sector.
  • Manage existing staff team, identify future staff needs and lead process of attracting and hiring staff to build team to support project work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 4 years of substation and/or transmission design, and/or 4+ years of power generation design (thermal, reciprocating, and/or hydropower), 2 years of which includes project management, site inspections, Engineer of Record roles, and including at a minimum, conceptual knowledge of physical, electrical, civil, and structural design components.
  • Professional Engineer designation in Canada. Equivalent professional designation in another country is acceptable, but candidate will be expected to obtain professional designation in Canada.
  • Experience with both traditional and alternative procurement delivery models.
  • Strong leadership and staff management skills, and program management experience with multiple national remote teams preferred.
  • Understands contractual risk and mitigation strategies in applicable delivery models.
  • Risk identification and management experience with power delivery regulatory approvals and design.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering, planning or a related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of industry experience
  • Experienced in development and management of strategic marketing programs for planning and/or engineering services
  • Experienced in development and management of a wide range of client relationships and specific program and/or project pursuits
  • Experienced in overall staff development to include recruiting, career path and professional growth
  • Experienced with industry associations and maintains a visible profile in the market sector
  • Ability to work cooperatively with Regional Market Sector Directors, Market Sector Directors, Business Class Directors, Regional Business Group Directors, Area Business Group Managers, Area Marketing Managers and Area Managers
