The Senior Environmental Advisor plays a key leadership role in improving compliance and environmental performance. Reporting to the Director of Environment and supported by the Junior Environmental Advisor, this position acts as a subject matter expert with respect to regulatory compliance, ensuring that environmental requirements are integrated, understood and applied consistently at all operational levels.

Key responsibilities include leading the permitting process (applications, renewals, amendments), overseeing environmental reporting, and managing the delivery of projects such as site assessments, remediation and risk analysis. The Senior Advisor ensures regulatory alignment across multiple sites, maintains audit readiness, and leads internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives. This role also works closely with legal counsel, regulators and other stakeholders to address compliance issues and respond to regulatory changes.

In partnership with the HSE, operations, engineering and external consultants teams, the Senior Advisor contributes to emergency preparedness efforts, drives the deployment of environmental strategies and promotes a culture of compliance, responsibility and sustainability within the organization.

This position requires occasional travel to sites located in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick.

  • Act as an expert in environmental compliance by ensuring the smooth integration of permits between sites, supporting internal teams, field operations and contractors, while optimizing renewal times to maintain consistent regulatory compliance.
  • Under the direction of the Director, directs all permitting activities, including applications, renewals, amendments, and resolution of non-compliance, ensuring alignment across multiple sites.
  • Oversee the management, accuracy, and control of environmental records, permits, and related documents to ensure regulatory compliance and audit readiness.
  • Monitor and manage compliance with environmental regulations (e.g., air, water, waste, hazardous materials), including reviewing inspections, risk analyses, and corrective/preventive actions, while coordinating key environmental reports such as compliance monitoring, cost performance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead the review and validation of environmental reports, fostering continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality of data and reporting processes.
  • Conduct environmental projects, including site assessments, remediation, air emissions sampling, and risk assessments.
  • Develop and lead the internal audit program for the EMS of industrial sites.
  • Manage environmental awareness training and sessions, including the deployment of procedures and "toolkits".
  • Represent the company at community engagement activities (e.g., community liaison committees), respond to public inquiries, and collaborate with emergency response agencies.
  • Communicate and train internal and external stakeholders on environmental requirements, sustainability initiatives, and compliance obligations.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel on enforcement actions, non-compliance events, regulatory changes, and legal risk reduction strategies.
  • Support the development and implementation of integrated HSE management systems, contributing to a culture of responsibility, safety and exemplary environmental management.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with regulators, industry associations and emergency responders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering or a related discipline; A master's degree or professional certification is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in environmental compliance, permitting, and program management, preferably in the recycling, industrial, or similar sector.
  • Demonstrated expertise in navigating complex environmental regulations across multiple jurisdictions (municipal, provincial/state, federal).
  • Proven experience leading regulatory permitting, audits, and environmental reporting processes, with a strong focus on accuracy and compliance.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple initiatives simultaneously and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Good command of computer tools, including Microsoft applications and web applications.
  • Excellent command of French and English, both oral and written (bilingual).
