Position SummaryReports to:Design Manager The Design Coordinator will be responsible for liaising with the design team, the construction team and project management team as well as other members of the project team on a regular basis for this progressive design build project. The Design Coordinator’s Key Responsibilities Are
- Receive, review, and manage project information from engineering consultants, internal construction teams, project partners, and the Client, ensuring full understanding of design requirements for highways, roadworks, utilities, civil structures, and marine works
- Compile, format, and submit design deliverables to the Client for review; manage the tracking, distribution, and closure of Client comments throughout the design lifecycle.
- Coordinate and liaise with design consultants, schedulers, construction operations, highway geometric designers, utilities engineers, structural engineers, and estimators to maintain alignment across project phases
- Develop and maintain discipline‑specific tracking tools for highway design, drainage, utilities relocation, civil works, and traffic management plans.
- Assist in coordinating geometric design packages (horizontal & vertical alignments, cross‑sections, road safety features, ITS, signage, and pavement design).
- Support the consolidation of utilities information including existing conditions, third‑party utility requirements, relocation strategies, conflict identification, and design integration.
- Coordinate interfaces between highway works, utilities, drainage networks, earthworks, and permanent/temporary structures to ensure a constructible and fully integrated design. Participate in identifying and assessing design-related risks (technical, schedule, constructability, and utility conflict risks).
- Support the design team in cost control activities, including quantity extraction, tracking design changes with cost impacts, and preparing data for estimating.
- Utilize advanced Excel tools (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, conditional formatting, data validation, macros) to manage design logs, comment registers, and cost-control spreadsheets.
- Prepare clear and concise written correspondence, technical memos, and meeting minutes.
- Coordinate technical and administrative activities among multiple internal and external stakeholders (Client, partners, consultants, utility owners, and authorities having jurisdiction).
- Facilitate interdisciplinary reviews and help resolve design conflicts across disciplines (highways, utilities, civil, structures, geotechnical, environmental).
- Support handover from design to construction teams, ensuring clarity on issued-for-construction (IFC) documentation, design assumptions, and outstanding design actions.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive and proprietary project information.
Education And Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (or relevant field of study) and a minimum of 2-5 years related professional experience working as a project coordinator in an engineering business or demonstrated equivalency of experience or education.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license or eligibility to obtain one within Canada.
- Experience in heavy civil infrastructure, such as highways, bridges, utilities, or transportation projects, is strongly preferred.
- Experience in heavy infrastructure projects is strongly preferred.
- Proficient in software related to the construction industry (e.g., AutoCAD, Navisworks and Bluebeam, etc.)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and overall MS Office suite (SharePoint, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization and with external stakeholder.
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency in MS Office (SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
