About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Director, you’ll play an integral role in the development and implementation of mechanical building system designs across a wide range of project types. Working within an experienced multidisciplinary team, you’ll contribute through all project phases—from field investigations and concept development through detailed design, tendering, construction, and commissioning. This role is ideal for a hands-on mechanical technician or technologist with experience in building systems design and construction. You’ll spend time both in the office and in the field, supporting project delivery through technical design, reports, site investigations, engineering calculations, drafting/modeling, and construction-phase reviews.
Primary Accountabilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assist in the design and development of HVAC systems, including Air Handling Systems, Boiler Systems, Heat Pumps, Ventilation Systems, Hydronic Systems, and associated Controls and Building Automation Systems.
- Assist in the design of Plumbing and Fire Protection systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, and government facilities.
- Perform engineering calculations including heating and cooling load calculations, ventilation calculations, equipment sizing, duct sizing, piping sizing, and plumbing calculations.
- Develop Concept Design Reports and Options Analyses to guide clientele through the schematic design phase of projects, helping to provide design solutions that fit operational requirements and client budgets.
- Conduct detailed site visits and field investigations to document existing building systems and gather information required for design development.
- Prepare and coordinate detailed design drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD and Revit.
- Support the development of equipment selections and coordinate with equipment vendors and manufacturers.
- Coordinate with Mechanical Engineers, Architects, Structural Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and other project stakeholders to develop complete construction drawing packages.
- Assist with NMS-specification development and preparation of construction documents.
- Participate in construction-phase activities including shop drawing reviews, responding to RFIs, attending site meetings, field reviews, deficiency reviews, and project closeout activities.
- Review and apply applicable codes, standards, and guidelines including ASHRAE, CSA, National Building Code, National Fire Code, NFPA, and Provincial Regulations.
- Support project delivery through accurate documentation, organization, and coordination while maintaining quality and schedule requirements.
- Contribute to maintaining EastPoint’s safety culture and commitment to high-quality technical deliverables.
Qualifications and Experience
We’re seeking a mechanical technician or technologist who combines strong technical ability with practical knowledge of building systems and construction. The ideal candidate is collaborative, detail-oriented, and interested in developing their skills within a multidisciplinary consulting environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technician program from an accredited institution.
- 2–10 years of relevant experience in mechanical building systems design, drafting, construction, operations, or consulting engineering.
- Working knowledge of building mechanical systems including HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems.
- Experience with Autodesk products including Revit and AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with mechanical design and analysis software such as Carrier HAP, Block Load, or equivalent software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Excel and Word.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply practical knowledge to technical design challenges.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Possess a valid driver's license and willingness to conduct field reviews and site visits.
- Eligibility for Reliability Status clearance through the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate (CISD) within six (6) months of start date.
Considered Assets:
- Experience in consulting engineering, construction administration, commissioning, or facility operations.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with TechNova as a C.Tech. or AScT.
- Familiarity with construction practices, field coordination, and contract administration.
- Experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting building mechanical systems such as boilers, chillers, air handling units, pumps, or BAS systems.
- Written and verbal proficiency in both French and English.
