About CRWS
Canadian Railway Services (CRWS) is a fast-growing engineering firm focused on rolling stock system design, integration, refurbishment, testing, and lifecycle support. We deliver high-quality, technically rigorous solutions that meet regulatory and client requirements across passenger and freight platforms.
We operate in a fast-paced, high-urgency rail environment where timelines are non-negotiable and where strong engineers thrive by taking ownership and moving projects forward; responsiveness, collaboration, and disciplined execution are essential.
What You’ll Do
As a Senior System Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for defining, integrating, testing, and supporting key rolling stock systems. You’ll work across all phases of the project lifecycle, from concept development to manufacturing support, in-service troubleshooting, and refurbishment, ensuring all subsystems operate as an integrated whole.
Key Responsibilities
- Define system-level requirements, interfaces, and performance criteria for mechanical and onboard systems (HVAC, braking, pneumatics, mechanical interfaces, communications).
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and designers to align design outputs with system requirements.
- Manage cross-disciplinary system interfaces with mechanical and electrical engineering teams.
- Analyze functional performance and safety risks; support FMEA and system-level hazard assessments.
- Develop and maintain interface control documents (ICDs), system block diagrams, and requirement traceability.
- Review and validate supplier documentation and component data for compliance.
- Contribute to testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation of vehicles and systems.
- Support development of verification and validation plans, test procedures, and certification-ready reports.
- Coordinate with regulatory authorities, certifiers, and clients to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
This role requires systems-level thinking, strong coordination skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Member of OIQ (Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec) or equivalent provincial body.
- 10+ years of experience in systems engineering within rail, transportation, or related industries.
- Strong understanding of rolling stock systems integration and relevant industry standards (APTA, AAR, EN, UIC, TC).
- Experience managing mechanical and electrical subsystem interfaces.
- Familiarity with lifecycle challenges and maintenance considerations for rolling stock.
- Proficiency with CAD tools and systems-level documentation practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
How You Work
- You think in systems and understand downstream impacts.
- You’re comfortable making decisions under time pressure.
- You communicate clearly and work well across disciplines.
- You balance technical rigor with delivery realities.
- You take ownership and follow through.
Working Conditions
- Full-time (40 hours/week), Monday to Friday.
- On-site presence at the CRWS Montréal office.
- Occasional travel and site visits depending on project needs.
- Flexibility required to meet project deadlines typical of the rail industry.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Group insurance and health benefits.
- RRSP or retirement savings plan.
- Paid vacation and 10 personal days per year.
- Professional development and training opportunities.
- Opportunity to work on high-impact rolling stock projects across North America.
Why Join CRWS
- Work on real, complex rolling stock projects with tangible outcomes.
- Collaborate with a technically strong, multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Gain exposure to the full lifecycle of rail vehicle projects.
- Opportunities for growth, learning, and increased technical responsibility.
