Clean Foundation brings specialized teams together to work on complex problems, delivering many climate action and capacity building projects and initiatives around Nova Scotia, PEI and the Atlantic region.

What You'll Be Doing 

The Director of Programs oversees one or more Managers and their teams, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and strategies. Projects included in this portfolio include, but are not limited to, the HomeWarming Program, the Home Energy Assessment Program, the Affordable Multifamily Housing Program, the Mi’kmaw Home Energy Efficiency Program, Public Housing Retrofit Projects and other partnerships focused on demand side management, research, and climate planning with Clean’s government, utility, private sector, and community foundation partners. This role involves approving recruitment and performance management decisions, overseeing financial management and reporting, strategic engagement with key partners and program funders, guiding new project design and delivery across a range of subject areas, and supporting Managers’ professional growth. Directors at Clean are expected to contribute to the financial sustainability, strategic growth and development of the organization.

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in business, project management or a related field; specialized industry certification, or an acceptable combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Knowledge of building science and energy efficiency retrofit implementation strategies.
  • At least five years’ experience managing complex projects, diverse teams, and related organizational functions.
  • Experience working with priority communities. 
  • Advanced organizational, teamwork, project management, analytical, strategic thinking, problem-solving and financial skills. 
  • Strong portfolio management skills. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Readily adapts to new ideas and initiatives, changes in processes, procedures, methods, etc. 
  • Commitment to uphold and advocate for Clean’s values and standards.
  • Communicates complex issues clearly and credibly with widely varied audiences.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite of programs, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  

Additional Assets 

  • Knowledge of demand side management programming in the Nova Scotia context.
  • Valid PMP certification or proof of other project management training is an asset.
  • Experience managing projects in non-profit environment is an asset.
  • Experience working in the environmental sector is an asset.
  • Other skills, attributes and certifications that are specific to a particular project may also be considered assets.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supporting Managers to achieve project performance targets and develop cohesive and collaborative project teams. 
  • Ensuring that Managers create and maintain project budgets and financial tracking and management systems that enable strategic financial analysis and decision-making.
  • Ensuring that Managers have an efficient and effective process for managing project schedules, staffing, internal and external communications, quality, and risks. 
  • Ensuring that Managers adhere to internal and external reporting requirements, including the development of reporting templates and processes to support efficient and accurate data collection and analysis.
  • Ensuring that Managers address project performance and financial issues promptly and implement financial improvement plans and resolve variances.
  • Driving continual improvement of projects and processes by supporting regular project health evaluations, strategic risk-taking and encouraging collaboration across projects and teams. 
  • Supporting resilience for project teams and the overall organizational resilience by leading the strategic development of new project areas and cultivating new funding opportunities.
  • Supporting the growth and development of their Managers by following performance management processes and by working to identify and action opportunities for professional training and development.
  • Providing timely reporting and information about their project portfolios and teams to their Vice President.
  • Facilitating organizational partnerships across teams at Clean, among other non-profit and service delivery organizations, utility, provincial, federal, municipal governments, and community-based partners. 
  • Maintaining effective communication within and across program teams, the senior leadership team, external partners, funders, and the media. 
  • Ensuring compliance with Clean’s occupational health and safety program.
  • Performing other duties/projects as assigned.

Job Benefits$100,000 - $120,000

A successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on various factors such as skills, experience, training and credentials, as well as other business purposes or needs.
