It takes a society to take on cancer – and the Canadian Cancer Society is leading the way MAKING AN IMPACT As a member of the Strategic Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Communications Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting and advancing awareness of CCS’s mission to external audiences. Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, this role assists in developing and executing communications plans to demonstrate the impact of our programs, services and advocacy work. This includes but is not limited to writing and content development, project management, media monitoring and analysis, and proactive and reactive media relations. This role is ideal for a results-driven communicator with proven project management skills, who has a strong foundation of communications fundamentals and experience in media relations with a keen knowledge of the media landscape in British Columbia and across Canada. What You’ll Be Doing
- Aid with the execution of communications strategies and tools aligned with overall mission and organizational priorities, with a special focus on travel and transportation services in British Columbia.
- Plan and execute media relations and PR plans as required.
- Work collectively with the brand marketing and digital engagement teams to support marketing and social communications as required.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to develop a variety of engaging communications materials such as news releases, key messages, fact sheets, speeches, presentations, digital content and more.
- Help with writing and editing various mission materials including reports, speaking notes, presentations, letters to politicians and bureaucrats, social media content and more.
- Project manage content approvals and sharing between internal and external stakeholders in a timely, collaborative and professional manner.
- Act as a point of contact on behalf of CCS for media and assist with media requests, triaging inquiries, supporting spokespeople and tracking results.
- Support media monitoring and reporting for CCS, and proactively identify emerging issues or opportunities in the news cycle.
- Reply to public inquiries in a timely and professional manner, collaborating with internal experts and stakeholders for information and fact-checking.
- Post content to cancer.ca or the Canadian News Wire as required.

Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and 3 to 5 years of experience in media relations or communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Positive, can-do attitude along with ability to self-motivate, work well independently and contribute to the positive culture of the team
- Demonstrated experience in communications strategy and tactics, including media and public relations
- Keen understanding of the media landscape, especially in British Columbia
- Strong editing skills and attention to detail
- Superb organizational, project and time management, problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
- Demonstrated flexibility, resourcefulness, resiliency and the willingness and capacity to produce quality results under pressure and to deadline
- Ability to build and sustain positive relationships with peers and stakeholders
- Proven ability to present creative solutions to challenges and issues management
- Excellent written (knowledge of CP style), listening and oral skills
- Proven experience with media monitoring (Meltwater, Cision), reporting and analysis
- Proficiency in Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams as well as SharePoint
- Video production experience is considered an asset
- Experience in a health-related environment, cancer organization or non-profit setting is an asset
- Experience communicating about advocacy, public policy or government relations is an asset
- English is required, French/Bilingualism (French /English) is an asset due to the organization’s nationwide operations.
